There are many reasons why people forget certain things. There's repression, which is done subconsciously by the mind. It forcibly forgets certain memories, usually memories involving traumatic incidents.

The most basic reason why humans forget certain things has something to do with the way we process information. Our experiences are based on our senses and emotions, all of which go through a three-step process: processing, encoding, and then storing that information. Processing involves going through the event itself in realtime (watching a movie). We usually forget information because of how we encode the information in our brain (only certain scenes in the movie are encoded, but some are dropped). Because of faulty encoding, the memories aren't stored in our brain, hence, we cannot recall them.

Another reason why we forget things is known as the recency effect. This is because the area of our brain that works with short term memory acts like a conveyor belt. As you put in more memories, the conveyor belt moves and pushes the oldest memories away. In this way, the more long ago a certain memory is, the more likely it is to be forgotten.

Memories can also be forgotten if we don't use them as much as others. It's like practice. The less you practice something (say, a martial art or calculus), the more likely you you are to forget it. Therefore, the more you use a certain memory or set of memories, the less likely you will forget them. But if you use that memory less, the more likely it is that you will forget.

memories normally have to be associated with emotion , need , etc in order to be recalled.

I believe our memories are designed , to help us through every day life......as though we were still living in the cave man days.

In cave men days , if we saw one of our neighbours , being eaten by a wild animal.......we would remember , not to go too close to that wild animal !

If you want to improve your memory.....use memory methods and techniques........such as the Greek House system.....where you put an item that you want to remember , in every room in your house.....but in your mind. .....ie you visualise it.

or use association methods....like the alphabet method......a = apple = apple with what ever you want to remember is now a picture in your mind......

People forget things.....because the memory is actually made to forget ! Otherwise you would remember every leaf , on every tree , and every crack on every side walk......and every grain of sand , on every beach !

In order to remember things , we need to want to remember them.....and use whatever methods it takes,,,,to remember them !

As we get older , our brains have so many ideas , thoughts and memories in........we are easily distracted , from what we want to do.....ie. remember everything that we want to remember ! So sometimes we forget.....

Some diseases of the mind also cause us to forget ie Alzheimers Disease.
