"Iron is a rigid metal."

is the correct way of putting it.

If you want my advice, don't try too hard to understand English because many of the rules don't actually make much sense.

Anyway: The reason the word "the" is not used is that "the" refers to a PARTICULAR (SPECIFIC) thing. For example, I might say, "The cat is black." I would not say "Cat is black".

However, "Iron" is a type of metal. It is NOT particular. When things are not particular, you do not have to use the word "the".

For example, say I wanted to say that cats, IN GENERAL, have teeth. I could say "Cats have teeth" or "The cats have teeth." In this case, either one works.

I hope that makes sense. Feel free to keep asking questions about this wacky language.

May God bless you.

I felt like I was in that same situation not too long ago--entertaining doubts about the Book of Mormon. I think in a small degree, it may be healthy--acting under the supposition that your testimony is first and foremost--that perhaps we simply don't have all the answers yet. I also read a good deal the resources that a lot of other people have already cited. They have good explanations. The last thing I want to say, is a question that I asked myself when I was asking too many questions at the same time. How frequently was I reading the Book of Mormon to begin with? Daily? Weekly? How intensely? Food for thought. I felt a lot better about those questions after I felt the spirit again as I read some of the best chapters in the book. Hang in there dude!

"Iron is a rigid metal" is correct. When talking about the properties of a substance in general, don't use an article.

Example: Mercury is a liquid at room temperature. Wool is heavier than cotton.

Iron is a rigid metal. Sounds better and not like some sort of appliance or person or something.

"The" is a definite article, it refers to something specific, already identified, either implicitly or explicitly. "The iron" would be a reference to a sadiron, for instance. Here, you are referring to the metal in a general way.
The correct sentence is therefore: iron is a rigid metal.
