Can We Use The Positive Effect of Religion to Influence Children?

I agree with most that relgion is bunk.

The same goes with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth fairy and such.

I have grown and learned to disregard those falsehoods, but I do see it's positive impact on society.

I really don't care what has to happen to make society a better place. I am willing to accept all answers.
My opinon is that "So what if it is false?"
If the outcome outweights the falsehoods, then why not?

Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy have at least given me some positive aspects about the world, instead of what it really is.

Granted, religion like everything is used for evil.
I will give you that. There is enough of that in the bible and Koran and every other religous doctrine.

Can we use the positive impact using religion to influence children to make this a better world. Even if it is false?

A proper exposure to God and religion can help to counteract the real brainwashing that popular culture is constantly throwing at all of us in books, movies, TV, songs, advertisements, and even video games.

Popular culture is constantly bombarding us with intensive, not-so-forcible indoctrination, aimed at setting up worldly convictions and attitudes.

Popular culture comes at us from all directions including books, movies, TV, songs, advertisements, video games and even the Internet.

A few of the these immoral values include:
- Lust and Sex (outside of marriage)
- A disrespect for God and religion
- A disrespect for lawful authority
- A disrespect for our human dignity
- Envy, greed and consumerism
- Anger and Violence
- Drug abuse including smoking and alcohol
- Vanity, outside is more important than inside
- Prejudice and hate

I think that if we expose our children to all this immorality without the moral anchor of God and religion "until they can come to a conclusion of their own" then we would be unwise, irresponsible, and frequently too late.

With love in Christ.

Shure, with the end of the traditional religious family, we also saw a change in family dinamics. Kids are not looking for their parents for guidance any more but rather, they learn from each other. So for the past 50 years or so, the passage of customs and values in society is no longer vertical (form parent to child) but horizontal (among peers).

Society can't continue to exist like that without major problems because it is a completely unnatural situation. It can't be natural because it's like the blind are leading the blind (which can be a good thing, as long as there is a third person who leads them both and can see further than they can). That's why we see the youngest kids allready desperate to do anything to fit in and be accepted by their peers. Peer pressure is a relaitvely new term. It's really what it claims to be - pressure.

I'm not here to debate which religion is best. What I'm saying is that religion used to be something that held families together through tradition. You gave up some aspects of your life depending on it's comandments - but you also gained benefits.

And also this isolation of kids is becoming true in religious life itself. Young people are so often lost between denominations and different churches. They go form one church one day then a "high voltage" group lures hem over to the other. There is no more guidance even among the religious! When I went to church with my family, I was told to stop figeting, sit up straight, and pray - even though my parents knew that I didn't really know what that meant. Now, what do parents do. they see their kids hampering on the floor in Church and don't even budge. Or they send them off to sundayschool, where ten and five year olds are given the same treatement.

What you're saying about how religion should be taught may be more real than you think.

Ps. About Santa, I was actually told as a kid that he was really a bishop who gave gifts to poor kids in disguise. I grew up in Eastern Europe where the communists changed his name to "father winter" so it would sound completely secular. they liked the idea of giving gifts to poor kids but didn't like religion. my mother told me that was bunk, and here is the proof:

Who's to say it is false?

As long as the belief system teaches love, respect, and forgiveness...then it does have a positive impact. A religion such as Christianity has the 10 Commandments, which help believers lead a noble and righteous life. How can "do not steal", "do not kill", "do not covet (be envious)" not be helpful guidance for a child growing up in today's world?
