I was searching the web to find out what Eid Aldha and Eid Alfittar are, and could not find anything explaining them but I did find a blog post and comments about Christmas being celebrated in Middle Eastern nations with decorations and shopping. I was a bit surprised to find Muslims defending the celebration of Christmas, but even more so to find ones defending specifically the decorations and shopping. Coming from a Christian background, and living in the Capitalist States of America, I am repulsed by the commercialization and rampant wastefulness of the Christmas holiday. (I am not happy either about all the false teachings that are rampant in Christianity.) I agree with others that these days are exploitative and unnecessary as we should celebrate the special people in our lives often enough that we do not need a store keeper to tell us it is time to buy a card or a gift. Spending time with your loved one, cooking a great meal for them, building them a piece of furniture, fixing something around their house that needs repair, writing them an inspirational poem, and many other things are precious gifts we can give to one another that do not require a card or a sacrifice to a family's income. I grew up poor in America and so it was hard to celebrate these days the way most of my countrymen do but I still loved the Christmas holiday because of the family togetherness. As an adult, interacting with people from middle class backgrounds, I came to understand how valuable poverty had been for keeping me from adopting false values and thinking they are good. Allahu akbar. EDIT: Why would we be sad about being a year closer to death, unless of course we have a reason to fear death. If we live right, we should not have this fear. Instead, I think birthdays should be appreciated as a milestone for one more year of survival on this crazy planet, a year's worth more wise and mature (hopefully), and a year closer to heaven.
