The New Testament nowhere assigns a certain percentage of income to set aside, but only says it is to be “in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). The Christian church has essentially taken the 10% figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. Although the New Testament does not identify a specific amount or percentage to give, it does talk about the importance and benefits of giving. They should give as they are able, “in keeping with his income.” Sometimes that means giving more than a tithe, sometime that may mean giving less than a tithe. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom as to whether to participate in tithing and/or for how much he or she should give (James 1:5). “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The most direct reference to tithing (that I can think of at the moment, anyway) is in the last book of the Old Testament, Malachi (3:8-10, KJV).

There are some other somewhat indirect references elsewhere throughout the Old and New Testaments (like the widow's two mites), though.

A tithe can be a place to start. The New Testament Christians were not told to give everything, though that one rich young ruler was told to do that.

What you are to give is from your heart. You are changed by the Holy Spirit, and are not to give to the church according to need, but according to the way God moves you, and your greatfulness to Him for bringing you the truth. Also to lay up treasures in heaven. Once you give it, it doesn't matter what they do with it, you gave your part.

If you believe that you are laying up treasures in heaven, that is: Believe what Jesus said about that, then I would encourage you to do so.

In Acts chapters 2-4 it talks about the early church, and nobody was needy. Everyone gave so that there would be noone in need of necessities. Actually, this was MORE than a tithe(10%), it was a total self sacrifice.

There are tons of opinions about tithing, but I promise you, you can't out give God.

We, as HUMANS, need to realize that we are stewards (managers) of the possesions that God has given us. It's all His anyway, and when we learn to approach it as His and not ours, our views totally change!

i think tithing is in the old testament

in the new testament you are required to give all you had to God. this is refer to the story of widow who give 2 coins. Understanding this story, the 2 coins might not be 10% of what she got, rather it is ALL that she has.
