Someone with low self esteem could feel they are not worthy of living and wish to have things happen to them. some people with low self esteem may have been told things like they are not worth anything, or that they will never amount to anything, or they should'nt have been born.
Someone who holds a lot of guilt for something real or imagined may also feel they are not worthy and may wish or feel they deserve to have bad things happen to them.
It is not generally healthy for someone to want bad things to happen to them and counseling may help.

If you're asking if I would be weird if I was hoping that bad things would happen to me, then YES. Yes, I would be weird. And possibly disturbed. It might be low self-esteem, it might be because the person wants attention, it might be because they have self-hatred. Whatever, I think a trip to the therapist is in order.

more than likely there is. this person needs to see a therapist or a counselor of some sort and tell him or her why he or she wants bad things to happen. it could be depression, low self-esteem, or some other kind of disorder but, its obvious the person needs immediate attention before he or she hurts themselves.

I actually dealt with this in therapy yesterday. It's a matter of comfort zone. A farm supply salesman earns $8,000 a month, but one month he hankers down and goes out and sells $12,000 worth of supplies. How much with he earn the following month in order to stay in his programed comfort zone? The answer is $4,000.
We are a product of our environment and we become used to what ever we have. You know, the things that you are used to. Like a woman that is in an abusive relationship, she would rather stay in that messed up situation than go out to discover a possibly worse situation.
I'm sure if your friend has become used to having things bad happen to them, that it is a comfortable place for them. If it is your intention to help them repair their life that you be very patient with them and make slow changes in your part of their life (remember you are not their entire life) and encourage their other friends to show him or her that they deserve more good things to happen to them now, no matter what their history has been. PATIENTS (or how ever that word is spelled) is your key word on this issue, PATIENTS.

Yes, this person needs therapy it's not necessarily
masochistic behavior. Perhaps this person is wishing for these bad things to happen to them for other reasons (example: having something bad enough to justify their depression),or maybe, they feel guilty about something and they feel like they need to punish themselves.
