Ol Roy, as well as several other brands that dog owners trust are contaminated with pentobarbitol..That is the euthanasia drug.
the FDA states that is from euthanized livestock, and not from companion animals(like that makes a difference?) and that it is in 'safe' amounts. I am wondering if the author would claim it is 'safe' if it was in his children's food.
I will post the FDA site, so check back if you need authentication
Wow! I have referred to that site many times (bookmarked) and now it is removed! Geeesh! I wish I had copied it to save..However, this page hasn't been removed yet> http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/dfchart.htm
It is the chart stating amount in each brand..

I whole heartedly agree about the lack of quality of store brand foods. Technically, it's 100% nutritionally complete...it's a matter of where they get the ingredients. When it says "chicken by products" that can mean feathers, beaks, feet, etc. Definitely garbage.
About Science Diet having peanut hulls, it is true and there is a good reason. Peanut hulls are a major ingredient in their weight loss diet because it allows the pet to eat their normal amount of food without feeling hungry, but still gives them the nutrients they need. Sort of like humans eating lots of salad, etc. Lots of people tend to over feed their dogs because they get that "look" and humans can't resist. Telling the owner of an already overweight dog to feed him less usually falls on deaf ears and they tend to cave.
As far as vets getting kickbacks from the food manufacturers...I WISH!! Alas, it isn't true. The food representatives and drug representatives that want to convince a vet to use their product has to do the same amount of work as any other company. They have presentations about why they think their product is best and why. The vet has to consider price, availability, client interest and other things. Bottom line, the vet still has to be able to sell it and it still has to be a quality product. If they don't get a good price from the manufacturer and don't think their clients will buy it, then it is a bad business move.
Pet owners aren't stupid. If a vet tries to sell them a product that they don't like, they won't buy it and will go elsewhere. And believe me, they will. Not only that, but they will tell their friends and family about any bad experiences.
My vets office prefers Hills Science Diet and it is a good quality food. Much better than Ol' Roy for sure and even better than what you can get in a supermarket. But we also carry certain varieties of Eukanuba, Royal Canin and Purina prescription diets. Why so many? Well, when a pet is on a prescription diet, not all pets with kidney disease will eat K/D by Hills. Some prefer NF by Purina. We do this as a courtesy to our clients so that they can have the food their pets prefer in one place.
What people feed their pets is a personal preference for the most part, with the exception of the garbage mentioned. Many pets are perfectly healthy on dog/cat chow or pedigree. Some aren't. Those that aren't should reconsider, but that's also a decision made best by research, information and a professional opinion.
Just my $.02 worth (okay, maybe $.05) ;-)

I am so sorry about your dogs! I have never bought that junk! I had heard long ago about it having so much junk in it that it was no good. But, I fed my own dogs Science Diet and thought I was doing good. Especially since the Vet sells it :-( Not so!
Science Diet is also JUNK and is why I think 2 of my dogs who were fed SD most of their lives, got multiple cysts on them. I would say my poor old 11 year old Tiger has at least 25 cysts on her or more and some are as large as a grapefruit! None of my other dogs ever had cysts like that, and they didn't eat SD.
Now I have switched them all to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and have my fingers crossed that this one is as good as it seems. Cost isn't bad, better than SD. On dogfoodanalysis.com it says that this one is a 4 and 5 star food where SD is a 1 star. Check out that website. It's very informative.

Its hard to tell, I was feeding my dog Ol' Roy's peanut butter biscuits which she loves. She started to act funny and just layed around which is not like her. I stopped feeding it immediately and she is now back to her old self. I have always fed her the Dad's brand and never had a problem. I pay between 7 and 8 dollars for an 18 pound bag. I don't know about anyone else but I will never feed my dog anything from that company again. There is a book on-line that you can order its 80 dollars and it tells you how to make your own dog food, biscuits, and treats. I'm sorry about your loss. It is not your fault that they died its that companies responsibility as well as our government for not doing proper testing and allowing unchecked imported goods. It makes you wonder what were eating.

People have been brain washed into thinking they are incapable of knowing what there dogs need. That it is some impossible task, highly scientific, that only "professionals" are qualified to do.
Until that chain is broken, and people realize that its not that difficult to know what your dog needs, the crap foods will continue to be made. If the companies stop making money on there garbage (which most pet foods literally are*) they'll get the hint and improve the foods.
Some companies already have. Natura, makers of Innova Evo, and several others have taken the clue that better nutrition, means better health for our pets. These foods may cost more, but in the long run they are cheaper because they help prevent health problems. Just as a healthy diet does for us.
*Pet foods are way a for large food companies to get rid of what they can't use to make foods for human consumption.
I'm sorry for your loss.

"No pet food purchased in a grociery store is good"
Then why does my vet sell both purina and Iams in their clinic, along side science diet which all three I can purchase at a local Meijer for half the price a vet charges.
No its those of us who are smart enough to save money for the exact same thing as you pay twice what we do that upsets you.
i'm sorry that your moms dogs died. Many pet food brands have found to be tainted with the poison. However, you are positive that this was a resault of eating old roy dog food and not a resault of rat poison? When did you have these dogs inspected by a vet? Perhaps you should get better references before pointing fingers.
However, there are premium dog foods, but US state laws require every pet food carry the needed daily requirements for your pet. The only difference you will find in the premium pet foods is they are specially designed for your pets specific needs. Ex:
Large breed dog foods
Small breed dog foods
Indoor/outdoor pet foods
Urinary care pet foods
Tooth care pet foods
There are a million different types. Old Roy is looked down upon because they provide the *basics* of what your dog needs. Yes, the premium is better for your pet. ALOT better, however, your mother's dogs did not DROP DEAD simply from eating old roy dog food unless they ate a portion of the tainted wheat gluten. Sorry, but if you say otherwise, you lie. And in that case, the premium dog foods were killing dogs too.
Your dogs will not die from Old roy dog food. They will also not live as long and healthy as dogs raised with premium foods.
However, to settle this score of argument in my conscience,
Isn't it worth an extra $10 or so to ensure your family pet lives a healthy, strong, fun and long life? I always reccomend Purina or Iams to those who are on a budget and Science Diet or NutraFeed to those not so worried about the money.
However, if you have a male dog or cat that is neutered, you should most likely feed the top brand feed, as male pets are prone to urinary tract infections that quickly escalate to deadly infections of the kidneys even if you do. The premium urinary care foods are just a way to minimize that risk.

I wish there were more people like you that understood how bad Ol' Roy is for dogs, as well as other grocery brands. There is no dog food in a grocery store that is GOOD for a dog. But, a lot of people don't understand what they're looking for in ingredients, or they don't bother to look...or perhaps they just don't have the money to buy a premium food. It would surprise a lot of people to know that for a dog food like Ol' Roy, there is no qualification of what could go into the food. This means that euthanized animals from shelters could be chopped up and stuck in the food. No, I'm no exaggerating here, it's disgusting. The quality of the so called "meat" that is stuck into these foods is horrendous, and I wouldn't even wish my worst enemy to eat this crap. Many people are uneducated in the area of animal nutirition and what exactly animals, dogs especially, need in their diet. Grains of any kind are absolutely useless and are used as fillers for the cereal-like kibble that they are fed. Another misconception is that dogs NEED veggies in their diet. Simply untrue. Good treats, yes, but the companies like Beneful that advertise a "balanced" nutrition with vegetables? That's complete bogus--a huge marketing ploy that many owners fall into because they think that since humans need a balanced diet, so do dogs. It's very sad, but how can we expect people to learn this if the food that's available is crappy? The best thing you can do is hope that all these recalls have encouraged a new want to learn... Tell your family, tell your friends..let everyone know. I go up to people in pet stores and by the time I'm done with them they're either relieved I've shut up or relieved that they know the truth. Spread the word, friend!!

Hello, I'm not trying to take sides in any of this but I just have a question? did a vet do necropsies on the dogs to know that 100% sure it was food related? I don't feed Ol' Roy so I don't have an opinion, but I do know most dog food plants make dog food for several different companies. there isn't a Ol'Roy dog food plant. Like the Menu foods that was tainted they made food for tons of can food companies from Iams, to the pouches for dogs. I was just wondering what the outcome was. Thanks

Ol'Roy is the #1 worst dog food ever made. Its sad what happened to your babies. That food is made of peanut hulls. YUCK!!! But to tell you the truth, If you look on the back of a bag of Science diet Light, It has peanut hulls too. Science Diet Large Breed puppys first 2 ingrediants is by-product and corn. Pretty unbelievable ha? Everyone thinks that its the best dog food because thats what their vet said. Well first of all, Vets dont have to go to nutrition school to graduate, Second, they get paid huge amounts of money to promote that food. Third, They get free food for life. Gee thats a hard decision to make for a vet. Natures Recipe is Awesome and so is Blue Buffalo. Good luck honey and again Im sorry for the loss of your babies.

I had no problem. I got online and read the names of all the products that were pulled from the shelves. I did have some O'Roy products and they were on the list... and because I possibility mixed it with some other food... I of course threw it all away. Seemed senseless to feed any food that was not recently purchased with the list of ingredients on it. The information was out there. Now you understand why It is important to always read the labels and check out the name and brand of what you are feeding your pets. Sorry for your loss.

that is so heart breaking to hear, sorry for your loss. i can't believe that they still sell that crap. before i met my fiance he fed the dogs crap old roy and other stuff and the dogs had skin problems and scratched all the time, now i feed them Iams and within the first month the skin problems cleared up and their coats were shiny and soft. now my dogs are so picky they will only eat that brand of food.
this is where people as pet mommys and daddys have to ask themselves if these pets were my real kids would you feed them all the garbage you feed them. i have heard people say dog food is expensive. if you cant afford to feed the dog then why have it in the first place. i have a newfoundlander and a russian wolfhound terrier and they dont break the bank. their food costs us about 40.00 CDN every 2 months. (i measure out their food and feed them once a day) there is no excuse to feed dogs junk food like ol roy and the no name store brands.!!!
also the cheaper the food the more poop you have to clean up after and more food you have to feed because it doent fill them up.
