There was a study done in the UK last year that indicated womens voices are processed in the same place as music. So when you hear a womans voice you move to your next thought. Her voice is like background music, so you ignore it easily.
I have to email my husband, he is very good getting me when it's in print! I think I sound like Charlie Browns teacher to my husbands ears wa a wah wa wah waah and I accuse him of hearing white noise when I speak.
I say outrageous stuff to see if he's paying attention, like "I spent $34,000 at Stride Rite today, kids shoe prices are throught the roof." 9 times out of 10 he doesn't even catch it.
Yep, it happens with all men. Men usually pay attention when we scream and yell, so hopefully she won't have to break the sound barrier to get through to you.

Well I'll speak from personal experience so I'm not accused of generalizing. Men speak in linear form of conversation (e.g. "I went to the store, bought an apple and then ate it.") Women tend to begin in linear from then go off on tangents while telling a story which leads to some confusion. It'll begin with "Guess what I bought at the store today?" and during that story while branch off to who she saw there, how she knows them, another completely unrelated topic about that persons friend's boyfriend/husband, etc, etc, with the main topic all but forgotten. I too have trouble following this because because: a) I still want to know what she bought and the longer the conversation strays from this, the more focused on it I become, and b) I try to listen because i care about her, but I really don't care about these other people.

This is quite normal, don't think when she is talking, only give you concentration to the words she is speaking, don't let your mind wander here and there.
When she speaks with you, don't try to make eye contact with her, and don't think anything else besides the things she is discussing with you.
Imagine to talk with her successfully while she is not around you. This helps a great way.

Hey, this happens when my husband talks to me. He goes on and on and I just begin to space out. The words go in one ear and out the other and my eyes get glazed over.
So for you, when she asks, "What do you think?", just shake you head a little side to side like it was a little to much for you and say, "I'm sorry, can you repeat the that one more time? I kind of lost you there for a second."
(I don't know if you'll get smacked or not, but you can give it a try.)

Married men have known the secret to this for years. You see, you don't really have to listen to them drone. You need to learn phrases such as, "Uh huh", "I see" and "That's interesting". Interject these phrases periodically while she is rambling on. Once you perfect the skill, you won't hear a word that she says and she'll be none the wiser.

No it shouldn't really happen because if you love her, you care for her, and if you care for her, you should listen to what she has to say and give your honest opinion
but SOMETIMES zooming out is okay..however, if it gets excessive, it's going to end on a bad note because she will ultimately realize that you're faking your answers without listenin to her

This is simple, the subject your girlfriend has taken is not of your interest or you think some thing else may be related to your profession.
