First is to ask yourself the question "How did I get here?" Statistics show that certain decissions can lead to increasing your chances of becoming a victim to violent crime. Stay away from any areas, if its possible, where illegal narcotic activity is common. Illegal narcotic activity carries violence and firearms with it. Alcohol is another factor. Violence tends to be found in areas where there is a high amount of alcohol abuse. Listen to that inner voice. Many a victim ignored that voice that says "something isnt right with this situation". That inner voice is often accurate. Give it the respect it deserves. If your going to go out and have a few and you walk into an establishment that feels tense.... its called nonverbal communication and you should probably find another place to go to. Dont go alone if at all possible. Dont "star gaze" when walking in an area known for violence. Criminals pick their targets. The more you star gaze the more you look like an easy target. Walk with determination and act like you know where you are... even when you dont. If traveling by vehicle keep the windows up and the doors locked when in an area where you get that feeling up your spine and that voice is saying "something isnt right with this situation". Get from point to point without unneccessary delay and again... avoid the star gazing. Avoid low light areas when walking at night. Dont flash alot of cash when its not necessary.
If you find yourself in a mass shooting situation keep these two types of defenses in mind. They are called "cover" and "concealment". Cover provides a barrier between yourself and a projectile such as a bullet. An example would be a wall, a turned over table, a pillar etc. Concealment is anything that hides your outline or hides you from the assailant such as a bush. Both are helpful and you need to locate one of them. Obviously cover is better. Place yourself in a turtle postion. What I mean by that is cover your vital areas. Often times in a mass shooting people are struck by stray rounds. These stray rounds often have already struck an object and are traveling at a lower velocity. Covering your vital areas is important. Dont stare the assailant down (most dont anyway out of fear to begin with). Dont panic and draw alot of attention to yourself. Maintain the "survivor mentality". What I mean by that is you need to imagine yourself living through the incident. Lock that idea in you head. See yourself walking out of it..... and maintain a positive attitude. By doing that you tend to think more clearly. Dont try to reason with the assailant. They are not thinking clearly and cannot reason. Otherwise they wouldnt be doing what they are doing. Stay positive, stay focused and stay alive.

If there are objects to use as a barricade pile chairs, tables and such against doors.
If shooting starts in open room shooter can pick off anyone he wishes so long as no one interferes. People trying to run away from him are not a threat. Group has best chance of SOME surviving if they all throw objects at same time. Chairs, books, bottles, bookends, shoes, anything.
He/she can't likely hit everyone at the same time. Knock shooter down and attack in force to disarm. He will probably get some but that way not all.
If all else fails lie down in blood puddle and play dead hoping he won't waste bullets on dead person.

1. Stay low
2. Find cover or an escape route. Either get behind something to protect yourself or try and get out of there (preferably get out)
3. Move in a jagged manner (side to side) when you are trying to escape (this makes it harder for the shooter to hit you because they won't have a steady shot unlike if you were moving in a straight line)
4. Call the police when you get out
5. If you can't get out, stick with your cover and don't do anything to make yourself a target

If you know where the shooter is, and you can get out, GO!
If you know where the shooter is, and you can not get out, HIDE! Lock or barricade yourself in room.
If you are armed, fight back. Most of these school and mall shooters are cowardly, picking places where guns are not likely to be. That also means they usually have no tactical sense. Find a good ambush point and shoot until the shooter falls down and dies.

how sad, all these people playin macho, allow me to tell you what you would do in that case. you will soil your pants, none truly knows how they will react if they have never been trained or put into a bad situation, it is terrifying, so, just dont say "I'd do such and such", you dont know, but, with that being said, remember the folks on the flight of 9-11, take charge of your destiny, do not stand b y like sheep and play dead, more folks are dying around by the minute, you dont have to stand real tall, but you do have to stand up.

During something like that. Well you have pretty much just as much chance of being shot as you have of not being shot, nomatter what you do. Your best bet to throw them off or try to overpower the attacker, maybe make a window for somebody to help you, surprise them from behind. Somebody has to try to sneak up on the guy out of his field of vision and jump him with something.

It's just a really bad situation. Hard to say how to defend yourself when you don't know where the shooter is. You could stay indoors and locked up in a room, but like what happened here, the shooter could come in that room.
It's just a bad sitution.

Stay yourself on the floor, Hide yourself if possible! Find something (like desk, hard steel tray, chair) to protect for your head and stomach.
Don't look suspect eyes, Just do what suspect want.
Don't fight with a shooter never ever!
I was that station before, that's how I made it.

Stay at home or move to move to Switzerland, a neutral country where everyone carries a firearm to protect themselves. They also have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
