Digitalfreethought sums it up nicely:
Q. If you don't believe in God, then what is the point of living?
Why does living need to have a "point" at all? Do the "lilies of the field" need to have a point to live?
If you must have a "point", then decide on your own meaning of life. We believe that it's much better to determine our own purpose, than to have some church do it for you based on their agenda!
Q. Doesn't being an Atheist "cheapen" life?
A. Actually religion cheapens life. Being an Atheist makes life more precious. Since there is no after-life, you must come to terms with the fact that this is the ONLY life you'll get. If an atheist throws himself in front of a bus in order to save a child, that action is much more meaningful than if a Christian did the same thing. The Christian thinks they'll just go to heaven and live there!
Look at the 9/11/2001 massacre in New York and Washington D.C. Those religious (Muslim) people thought that their actions would hasten and ensure their entry into eternal bliss, but what they actually did was throw away the only life they had in an act of "faith".

The facts show that when you die thats it. You die. Why believe it is any other way that is not factual? Life just is, make the best of it. Why get depressed over something you have no control over. I would much rather be depressed over the truth than to believe a lie, such as religion/gods/souls/afterlife...

I do believe in God, also His only Son Jesus Christ born by a Virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit. Still I don't know where I am going after life. I do know I am here now and I have to do my share of service for God, as He directs me. I pray that He directs my every move, therefore, I have little time to ask the non-believer, what do they think, if it's not about God? I can not even imagine or want to know what that may be. When I come across, a known person, who does not know Jesus, on purpose I start talking out loud about my personal testimony's, the miracles that have kept me alive, especially, after reciting the Rosary. It is, to me, more important on planet school to be, Christ Like, as oppose to Christian. I find Christians are not getting the point, especially the part, do not judge because you will be judged in the same manner.
God bless us all...

'Isn't that depressing' pretty much sums it up. If you choose beliefs based on what makes you happy, or what you want to be true, then you're deluding yourself. I'd love to go to heaven when I die, but I'm not an idiot and I realise that my desire to go there doesn't mean it exists.
The only reason you think death is depressing is because your parents told you that you'd live forever in heaven. Imagine if a six year old child were told on Christmas Day that he wouldn't get any presents that year. The kid would be devastated, right? But there are billions of people who don't celebrate Christmas, and they're not thinking "I wish I got a present today".

I believe that there is a POSSIBILITY of being reincarnated, but I am not totally convinced. Plus, I don't devote much time to obsessing on the matter. There are too many things to do in life than worry about afterlife. I enjoy a good night's sleep and I would be so happy if death is the Big Sleep, especially because nobody has ever offered any fairytale about the afterlife that sounds like it would be fun to go there.

Yes I believe that when you die, you just die. It doesnt depress me because i am not fooling myself, I have no need to. I spend my few years here thinking about nature, history, philosophy and life. I spend most of my days with my children and my husband. I sit under a tree and breath in life. Its all very refreshing. It makes me more sad to see relatives that are close to death, because I know I will only see them in my dreams soon. Im happy for them because they are comforted by religion and feel they will not be alone.

I'm more depressed by the fact that most of the Christians who frequent this board seem to be living only to die. So they can go to Heaven. I just really can't understand living waiting for death. They all seem so preoccupied with heaven....

What's depressing is the idea that I might waste my life not living it to the absolute fullest hoping that I am pleasing some, very likely, imaginary fairy god father by depriving myself of pleasure so that I can have a reward that may or may not exist.
I'd rather live my life now.
Peace

First, let me say I neither believe nor disbelieve in God, or any other deity. I am an agnostic. I don't just believe, I KNOW that I exist.
I believe in the correctness of good logical reasoning, and the validity of conclusions drawn from irrefutable evidence. When it comes to God, I deem the evidence insufficient on both sides, so I make no conclusion.
Sure, it can be depressing to live life without believing in an omnibenevolent omniscient omnipotent being, but you know as well as anyone that the truth is not always what we want it to be. I refuse to lie to myself just so that I can feel comfortable in life.
If God does exist, I have no doubt God would want us to try to get along and respect one another, regardless of whether or not God exists. That is why religious wars are so ridiculous!
I also believe that if we refuse to assume the existence (or nonexistence) of God, that we will work harder to realize worthy goals in this world, such as, perhaps, an ultimate end to physical death.
I also wish more people would realize that the world's major religions do NOT have a monopoly on ethical behavior. It is absurd to claim that someone cannot be a good person if they do not attend a church every week.

Im an agnostic, i believe that there could be a god and an afterlife, no one knows for sure. About afterlife, I wish there was an afterlife, but when i really think about it i don't think that there is one. It is just a product of our imagination. It is sad, but i just ignore it and hope for the best.
