I was very convicted at a retreat that I went on. The speaker said why dont we hunger and thirst for Gods true righteouness? He said the answer is we fill up on what the world has to offer that we are full and as a result don't hunger for Gods word.

I want to grow more in God and be content and I realize "more" is not always "better" but why is the world so materialistic and complicated? Why arent people sastified even when they have more than enough? I thought I would toss this one "out there" as this has been on my mind.

The reason that this world is so complicated and materialistic is because they don't realize that they have a purpose in life. They are trying to satisfy a emptiness and hunger that is worldly. We are born into this world as sinners and with salvation we learn that this world will pass away. We then no longer desire the things of this world but of the here-after. Some people never try to find the reason for being born, they just stumble along with their sinful selves, seeking material things to satisfy themselves. This is why life seems so complicated for them. They are searching for things in a world made for evil. (things like joy, peace, love, etc.) Heavenly things are gifts from God found only by those who seek to do God's will. God's will is to proclaim (or witness to) the unsaved about eternal life! Not a life with more cars, houses, money, food, etc. Not earthly things. If we continue to seek only earthly things that is ALL that will ever be found. Seek Ye First The Kingdom of God and ALL things will be added UNTO YOU. Not so complicated!

Despite what you are told, materialism is not always bad.

Also, do you wonder why you're taught, by the Church, that materialism is bad and you should give money to the Church? Those two things seem to conflict.

Anyway... materialism is GOOD. How? It motivates people to live up to their potential. If they live up to their potential, they will earn more money, and buy more things. When they buy more things, they drive the economy and help other people prosper as well. You can be materialistic without being greedy.

Most people can't be materialistic without working hard. So, if they keep wanting more, they have to keep benefitting the world more, which is good. You can enjoy material goods without being attached to them - then it starts affecting you negatively

I live a very simple and uncomplicated life on purpose. I choose to have very few things. But the things I do have are very nice. And I don't feel guilty for having them. I help people all the time, and what I have I deserve. And I enjoy the material things I have for the time they are in my life. However, if any material good got lost or destroyed, I would not be upset since I am not attached to them.

Hope that helps!

You shouldn't let a religious speaker make you feel like you're not living your life right and that everything is all effed up. The world is complicated and there is nothing you can do about it. To want material posessions is natural and healthy. It doesn't mean you're going to hell or God is up there judging you for not "thirsting for his righteousness." Religion will always try to make you feel like you don't worship God enough. If you buy into it enough, your life will feel unfulfilled until you die. Be happy to be alive and stop taking religion so seriously. Yours is just one of over 400 religions, all that think they're the right ones, all with different rules.
