my favorites, to start with, would be the book of John (new testament), Acts and Romans.... and the book of proverbs in the old testament. (the other gospels (luke, matthew and mark) are good but i prefer John as i see others do too.. you can always go read the other gospels after you read thru some of the other books)
Genesis would be one that is really good to teach history and get an idea of some of the things that happened... how, etc
the New Living Translation is an excellant 'first' bible... i have had mine for a long time and still use that version the most.
(for those who don't 'get' why christians say to start in the new testament... it is because that is when Jesus was born... hence the name Christians.... when you are a new Christian, it is important to read about Jesus, his life, his death and his resurrection from the witnesses who were there)

If you have never read any of the Bible I would start with the book of Luke because it starts with the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. The Old Testament is simply the old agreement; testament meaning agreement or covenant. The new agreement or New Testament claims that there was something wrong with the old agreement according to Hebrews 8:7, but the old is still good for learning according to Romans 15:4 and the things that happen to Israel are to be used as examples for us according to 1 Corinthians 10:1-13.
A word of advice; always check what you hear about the Bible with what is actually in the Bible. The devil teaches too (1 Timothy 4:1-4; 2 Timothy 4:1-4; 1 Timothy 1:3-11) and through good looking and good sounding people according to Matthew 7:15-20. So test what you hear and only hold on to the good (1 Thessalonians 5:21; Acts 17:11). Those whom the Lord will send will speak His Word (John 3:34; Jeremiah 23:22). This is how you will recognize a servant of the Lord.

I agree with the rest, it would be nice to start in one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John). If you wish, you can also switch between reading a book in the New Testament, then a book in the Old, and so on and so forth, therefore getting an overall feel for the Bible.
It might help to look into a church near you, most of them have a weekly Bible study. Just make sure it's a Bible-believing church. God gave His life for you, surely you can give one morning each week to Him?
And for all the atheists who responded:
Even if you don't believe the Bible, knowing what it says can still be helpful, so you know that someone is wrong if they claim that the Bible: hates African-Americans, says that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, or supports child-sacrifice. And yes, I have met people who claimed that the Bible said these things, and I was able to refute them by telling them that I had read the entire Bible, which mentioned none of these things.

Renae,
I'll dispense with frivolous and nonsensical talk and give you answers deserving of your sincere question. There's a site
that hosts Questions Young People Ask at Watchtower.org.,
that will be helpful and directional for any and all teens. It takes the guesswork out of growing up.
As for reading the Bible, start from the beginning, read it slowly and meditatively and if you care too, use a Bible
commentary that will simplify the reading of each book along with chapters on the Bible and its Canon, the Hebrew text of the Holy Scriptures (commonly referred to as the New Testament; early catalogs of the Christian Greek
Scriptures (commonly called the New Testament); Some Leading Papyrus, Vellum and Leather Manuscripts; the Leading Bible Translations, the internal harmony of the Bible, prophecies and fulfillments and more.
Enough said, the Bible commentary is "ALL SCRIPTURES INSPIRED OF GOD AND BENEFICIAL" which will be provided free of charge by writing to Jehovah's witnesses at 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, New York 11201-2483

First, I recommend finding a Church that will help you learn. Make sure they have a youth department for your children. I recommend visiting more than 1 church until you find the one that best suits your needs. Pray to God to help you find somewhere. Then you can read along while the minister preaches and you can go home and finish reading the rest. Also, invest in a good Study Bible.
When I started there was no order for me. I just jumped in and read Genesis first because I wanted to know how it all started. Then I went to John, Luke has most of the parables so I read Luke next, then I read Exodus. Then I wanted to learn about the people so I read about Samuel, David, Elijah(my favorite next to Jesus), Solomon. Somedays I just opened it and whatever page it was on, I began reading.
Hope this helps!!

Start with the book of John, then start in Genesis and Matthew and read some from each Testament each day. I would recommend finding a good Bible believing, Christ preaching church to go to, but you don't have too. May the Spirit of the Lord guide you and your husband in your readings. Please feel free to add me to your contacts and email me if you have a question about the Bible, I will do my best to help. God bless.

Start off with the Gospel of John..then the books of Acts. Once you get through that just start at the beginning. You don't have to be churches goers to be born again. You both need to invite Jesus into your life as Lord and Savior. In doing so the Holy Spirit of God will teach you the word and apply it to your life.

The new testament is concealed in the old testament....the old testament is reviled in the new testament. They go hand in hand. But it's best to learn about Jesus first in my opinion

Hi Renae...The entire plan of God starts in the beginning and that is Genesis 1:1.....I would suggest you start there.
In order to "rightly divide" the word in wisdom, knowledge and understanding it's vital to have the whole picture and then we can understand the fulfillment of Jesus purpose to mankind. John of course is wonderful scripture yet the main subject of that gospel is the deity of Jesus Christ. I would suggest just as a point of understanding conversion Romans 12 (actually the whole epistle is addressed to new converts). Then I would go right back to the beginning in Genesis and start from there. There's a purpose for the canonization of the old testament to the believer which is full of history and types to relate to Jesus teaching and your understanding in the gospels and why he did what he did and said what he said.
I would also highly recommend not missing a " jot or a tittle" and also find yourself a good copy of Strongs Concordance coded to the Hebrew and Greek (the online versions I really wouldn't recommend since they are denominationally biased)
In the book of Isaiah we are instructed to study and read scripture line upon line verse by verse precept upon precept (teaching). Pray also for the Holy Spirit to give you eyes to see and ears to hear because God's beautiful Word certainly does speak to us.
Personally I would also recommend a verse by verse chapter by chapter bible study at www.theseason.org....(the bible study is located in the area of the website called the "Plough")
I pray you have a wonderful spiritual journey in seeking God's truth.

The Gospel of John.
Then read Ephesians.
If you want to systematically read the entire Bible, you can do what I do. Get three bookmarks. Start one in Genesis, start the second in Psalms, and start the third at the beginning of the New Testament, Matthew. This way, you won't get bogged down in Leviticus or Judges, you'll always be getting some wisdom or prophecy, and some reading about Jesus or instruction from the New Testament. It keeps it interesting.
Be sure to always pray that God will direct you in his word before you start.

in the experience that your are a Christian your heavenly Father continues to be alive - extra advantageous than the earthly father who died. study Psalms 23 - it supply you convenience and braveness. in case you want to be taught extra with regards to the Triune God then it incredibly is a distinctive tale. a million. Get a Bible this is translated in modern english (digital mail me - I actually have a good suggestion) 2. shop the Bible next on your mattress. so which you would be able to study some as against accepted once you awaken. 3. initiate from Genesis a million. New testomony is a continuation of previous testomony. Or in case you have like 20 min each morning, study a NT financial disaster and a OT financial disaster. it is likewise possible to study this each morning which comprise your loved ones. do no longer ignore with regards to the names in the OT - i understand they might get particularly uninteresting yet very academic. it is going to take a twelve months or so so which you would be able to end analyzing the entire Bible. then you definately can initiate yet back.
