Hi dmd,
I think they along with moses will play a very important role as the 3 wittiness the Bible talks about coming back to witness to those during the tribulation. The Bible says it is appointed unto man once to die. They have never died. So I personally believe that they will witness to the unbelievers during the tribulation period.
Very nice question. Thank you.

Jesus is Lord

Dear GOD did take Enoch and Elijah to heaven without them dying as they were righteous people of GOD and GOD left an example for us that we who want to enter into the Second Coming of the LORD must try to live a life that od Elijah and Enoch.

Enoch in Hebrews 11:2 is translated by faith that he should not see death. He had the testimony that he pleased God. This, if you can receive it, is how the rapture really takes place. Enoch represents the hidden rapture underway.

Elijah is a little more complicated. He is first seen the the Old Testament taken up to glory; but leaving a double portion of his spirit to Elisha, much as Christ spirit came back upon the church as the Lord was seen to depart.

In the New Testament we our told directly that the spirit of Elijah was in fact John the Baptist. Moses and Elijah appeared with the Lord in the transfiguration. While Moses did indeed die, Satan was not allowed to dispute his body.
There is one more event involving the spirit of Elijah yet to come. This is recorded in Revelation Chapter 11.

All I can say of Elijah is that his spirit, with that of Moses, seems always tied into primary events that shape the outcome of God's eternal purpose on earth. I think his translation before Elisha was for the benefit of other prophets. Both his first death and his last follow the pattern of the Lord's death.

Actually he did not do so as John 3:13 tells us " Moreover no man has ascended into Heaven but he that descended from Heaven the Son of Man " Elijah was taken to another assignment and Enoch went to sleep with the knowledge he had pleased God well (he died in his sleep and his body was nowhere to be found for his tormentors to abuse ) No One went to Heaven Prior to Jesus hope this helps Gorbalizer

Because God want to keep their body's alive so they could return to earth as the two witnesses in the end of the times. They shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore day's clothed in sackcloth. These have many powers and when they shall finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottom-less pit shall make war against them ,and shall overcome them, and kill them. After three day's and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them ,and they stood upon their feet, they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them,Come up hither and they ascended to heaven on a cloud and their enemies beheld them.

To encourage us! Elijah and Enoch are examples of those that will be living when Jesus comes back. Moses, that died before he was taken to heaven, is an example of those that will raise up when Jesus comes back. When Jesus was resurrected many came out of their graves too.

Because Enoch was so close to God he really wanted him with him and Elijah because it was prophesied that Elijah would come back before the Messiah and his was would come to earth as John the Baptist . . . its really not as complicated as it seems i am just bad with words

As a prophet of Jehovah, he foretold God's coming to execute judgment against the ungodly. Likely persecution was brought against him and God removed him and cut his life short at 365 years. God disposed of his body as he did Moses body.
Elijah is transferred to another assignment . He was rewarded for his faithfulness.

They probably have a role to play in the future of the world but a little less significant to what Prophet Jesus (PBUH) does when he returns.
