NO-unless you want to trash the clutch.....thie is going to depend on the amout of road ahead, keep in mind you can brake to slow the car and shift to an apporiate gaer later.. here is my guide i used to teach my son 1st gear 0-20mph, 2nd gear 15-30mph, 3rd gear 25-40, 4th gear 40-50mph, 5th gear 45 and up....... notice there is some overlap but that helps depending on engine size....

No, if you pay attention to the speed that is in each gear range, you will just have to downshift to that gear you are going to be in. Just apply your brakes, when you get off the intersection, see how fast you are going and downshift to that gear.

Example, most speed ranges for each gear usually go as ...
1st - 0 to 15
2nd - 15 to 25
3rd - 25 to 35
4th - 35 to 50
5th - 50 and up

So you see if you were going around 70 mph, and needed to exit off the highway, you would drop down to roughly 30 to 40 mph, you could either downshift to 3rd or 4th and see if you need to shift up or down any further to get the right gear for the speed you are going.

Also most of the time once you let off your gas pedal your car will automatically slow down, if its a standard, and you wouldnt need to apply your brakes at all, just exit off with no acceleration and then downshift when you re apply the gas.

push in the clutch and down shift to a lower gear. If you are talking about exiting the freeway, then 4th gear would work.
Know what the speed range is for each gear and when you slow down to the bottom range of that gear select a lower gear or use the clutch. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

I have a 98 Chevy Tracker....I bought it new in 98.....It is a stick.....I just brake until I'm just about stopped, then I put it in neutral until I need to go again.

If I don't come to a complete stop, I just shift down to 2nd gear if I'm going slow enough.

I've never had a problem with it! Never had it replaced! It has 74,000 miles on it!

I coast
brake

All the while keeping my clutch to the floor and my hand on the stick!
(just in case)

MY god! what terrible advice people give!!! I agree with above poster.

If you can drive off the freeway comforatably in 5th, then do so. Stay at freeway speed UNTIL you are OFF the freeway and onto to the exit ramp. THEN slow down (by lifting of the throttle and using the brakes if necessary).. THEN change into whichever gear you need to continue at your new speed..

whatever you do.. don't go changing down to first at freeway speeds.. you'll dump your gearbox it bits all over the road! And don't change down to slow down either. it puts strain on your car, and reduced car control.

Your brakes are designed for slowing the car down... not the gears!

As you slow, you down shift one gear at a time.

slow down a little bit with the brakes and shift down to fourth then slow a little more and shift to third and if thats too fast then shift to second. but DON'T shift right down into first at highway speed, you'll screw up your tranny/engine bigtime not to forget you might lose control if it's wet

I usually just engage the clutch and brake to slow down, and then downshift to third when I'm slow enuf. If I have to stop, I just engage the clutch and brake until I stop, then when stopped I shift down to 1st.
