does anyone know how to scan a document directly into word so that it can be re-formatted? everytime i try to open it with word, all i get is non-sensical characters

By saying that you're getting characters, it sounds like you're on the right track. You need to use an OCR to convert the printed words to editable text. OCR should be part of your scanner software.

My guesses as to why the characters make no sense...
- Make sure that your original in not being scanned upside down.
- The original should not be skewed when scanned, it should be square to the scanner bed
- For better accuracy, make sure the scanner is set to at least 300dpi or higher
- Keep the driver up to date

You must scan it using OCR software. Usually you get that software with your printer. Look for some kind of printer toolbox icon to see if you can set the scan to text. Also, besure you save the fia as a .DOC and not .RTF. RTF sometimes gives odd outcomes. More than likely you will have to edit the scan by doing spell check when you are done.

Highlight everything in Word and select COPY. Click in the area of the web form to insert the text and press the keyboard combination CTRL+V (paste) that should work. If not, there is a problem with their form.
