Depending on your driving and familiarity with the roads, about four and a half hours. It is two hours under good conditions down I-5 to Eugene, then another two and a half hours over the coast range and down the coast to Eugene, again under optimal driving conditions. Allow an extra hour and you will be just fine!
Down I-5 from Portland to south of Eugene where the turn off is to the coast, you will average 65 mph or a bit more with no problem. Once you head off the freeway, expect traveling speeds closer to 45mph, esp. if there is a lot of traffic.

The fastest route from Interstate 5 to Coos Bay is Highway 42 south of Roseburg. If you take Highway 126 out of Eugene or Highway 38 south of Cottage Grove, you can add another 30 minutes to your travel. However, Highway 38 is more scenic as the stretch between Scottsburg and Reedsport follows along the river.
On a good day (weather, traffic, construction), it takes just under five hours to get to Coos Bay -- door to door.
I checked the Oregon Department of Transportation's travel information Web site, www.Tripcheck.com. There's no major construction scheduled on Highway 42 right now. That could change later this summer, so check again before you go.

I agree with the time from Portland, but I usually take the 205, so it is a bit longer for me. I am coming from Tacoma, WA - and it will be a 6-7 hour drive to Coos Bay. I will be down there at the end of June for the Coquille (pronounced Ko-Kwell) Tribe Restoration Day.

About 3.5-4 hours, if I remember right. One of the most boring drives I've been on, but totally worth it if you're going for the dunes.
