Whats the right way/ wrong way to do these? i feel a little stress when i do them in the front part of my knee cap, is this normal? is it becuase im not use to doing these?

check out the link below for some examples. I would not attempt these until you have mastered the squat utilizing both legs. you may want to start out with using a single leg press first if that equipment is available to you

You probally are not used to doing them...Check proper techniques..
