Both. Medically, God has gifted doctors with the knowledge and ability. In a divine nature, with strong faith, it really does happen. I have personally witnessed two family members in a situation where doctors have said, "you might want to start preparing yourself", "you should start making arrangements", and "there isn't anything else we can do but make him comfortable"......... They lived by the power of prayer to God and by the deep faith in Christ Jesus who defeats death.

15He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
This text is not in the most reliable and oldest manuscripts that have been discovered.
However, any true doctor will tell you that all they do is help the body heal itself. Medinces, surgeries, and other medical practicals aide the body to restore health. There are many that will say that God is the one who heals. So when we pray, we pray that God will heal in the manner He choses to heal. If He choses to do a miracle and restore health to the one we have prayed, or that God uses doctors and other of the medical proffession to aide in that, the bottom line is that God still does the healing. Even in radical chemo, to destroy cancerous cells.

I'm pretty certain he's referring to divine healing but one should remember that not everyone in Biblical times got healed of every ailment. In Nazareth, Jesus could not do the mighty works he did in other places because of the people's unbelief. My personal belief is that if you are praying for someone, you should believe that God will heal them, but ultimately the decision to heal or not is in His hands; not yours. We all have to die some day, so you know God won't heal everyone. This doesn't mean that God won't heal anyone. I've seen people miraculously healed and I've been healed a few times too.

It means both. If one is sick we should pray for them. The laying on of hands is more significant than prayer alone because it sybolizes the great deal of faith that the sick has in God. The sick preson may also ask to be anointed with oil, same difference; it shows sincere faith. There is no spiritual healing power in the oil; it is just repsentitve of The Holy Spirit and the healing of our sin sickness that Jesus did as He hung on the cross.
From a medical stand point, it is slightly healing to have an other person lay hands on someone who is sick. People try to attach a spiritual reason for this, but it is all scientific. It has to do with energy and electro-magnetism of the human body. It revitalizing for the sick person to a have healthy human being lay their hands on him/her. Not to mention that they feel loved and cared for which helps them psycologicly.
I also believe that God helps those that help themsevles. If you have a terminal illness and don't do anything to about it you will never recover. It's as simply as that. It is common knowledge that people live longer today than they did 500 years ago. People in devoloped societies have a longer life expectency than people who live in pimative societies. That is due to modern medical sience. God gave us (mankind in general) that knowledge, and we would be stupid not to use it.
Sometimes God may choose not to heal us because of the law of Sowing and Reaping. If some one is a heavy smoker and they die of lung cancer, they have reaped what they have sown. The same can be said of any sin:
alchohlism= liver disease
fornacation= aids, STDs
dope= memory loss, brain damage
ect...ect... the list goes on and on. This does not mean that God WON'T heal someone under these conditions, it simply means that if He doesn't, they have no one to blame but them self. God loves everybody, and does not want any one to die and go to hell (2 Peter 3:9b). No matter what anyone does, or how far into sin they may be, or how far gone they are, God still has room in His heart to forgive them. Look at John 3:16 "For God so loved the WORLD..." That's ANYBODY. We all have sin and because of that we cannot go to Heaven. (Romans 3:23) The reason why we have sickness and death on earth in the first place is because of sin. "...as by one man(Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." (Romans 5:12). The penalty must be paid for our sin before we can go to Heaven. Hebrews 9:22b. Jesus did this when He died on the cross, Hebrews 9:28. Then He gave us the hope of this salvation when He rose from the dead on the 3rd day. You can have asurance of salvation if you place your trust in Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9. You must confess and repent of your sin and ask Him to save you; and He will, 1 John 1:9.

Good question.
I Think it can be both. My spouse has seen many medically Divine healing in the hospital when all hope was lost. So Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever. He is still healing people.

God uses the method of the laying on of hands in that he channels His power through believers to heal the sick.
I have personally seen it....many people really are healed by God's sovereign grace.
Further, God has chosen some,to have the gifts of healing and miracles....it is a world that many have not been exposed to(even in some Christian circles)

There is a difference between healing and cure. When you are healed you are at peace with where you are, even if you are not cured. However, healing touch that cures has also been documented in numerous spiritual paths.
I would think that Jesus is referring to both.

When Jesus sent his disciples out with instructions to heal people, he had given them Holy Spirit to do actual physical healings. These works, however, were not to continue indefinitely. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 says: "But whether there are [gifts of] prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will be done away with. For we have partial knowledge and we prophesy partially; but when that which is complete arrives, that which is partial will be done away with."
The purpose of these gifts is no longer required. They were meant to establish the divine credentials of the message that Jesus and his followers were bringing. This isn't needed anymore.

Both probably. Jesus knew things we don't. But today there is CPR than can restore life to a dead person in the right circumstances.
Every kid knows a touch of his mothers hand on his forehead makes him feel better.

For some of us, it means to heal medically, as in nurse them with love to wellness. For those with healing hands, it means with divine healing.
