Yes, you can change from separate to joint by filing an amended return (From 1040X). Here's a link to the form (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf) and the instructions(http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf).

You're lucky that you don't want to go the other way because you CANNOT change from joint to separate after the due date for the return (tomorrow for 2006 returns),

Yes with a 1040X amended form. You can change your return.
