Didn't the apostles have anything better to do than come up with after-death threats?

Did God just create this Hell place out of personal amusement? And then beget a cruel religion just for kicks?

Webster’s Dictionary says that the English word “hell” is equal to the Hebrew word Sheol and the Greek word Hades. In German Bibles Hoelle is the word used instead of “hell”; in Portuguese the word used is inferno, in Spanish infierno, and in French Enfer. The English translators of the Authorized Version, or King James Version, translated Sheol 31 times as “hell,” 31 times as “grave,” and 3 times as “pit.” The Catholic Douay Version translated Sheol 64 times as “hell.” In the Christian Greek Scriptures (commonly called the “New Testament”), the King James Version translated Hades as “hell” each of the 10 times it occurs.—Matthew 11:23; 16:18; Luke 10:15; 16:23; Acts 2:27, 31; Revelation 1:18; 6:8; 20:13, 14.

In short: God did not create hell as in a place of firey torment. Hell means shallow grave. If you are planning on getting buried then hell is where it will happen. Nobody is going to hell of fire and brimstone it doesnt exist. you die and its like sleep and you will be ressurected after armageddon.

You make a fine point. The purpose of religion is to order and inform the behavior of the believer. The only rational reason to convert to a religion, then, is if one believes those doctrines will improve the quality of life they enjoy. On the other hand, to convert because one is afraid of some after-life torture fabricated by ignorant barbarians in the first century is, well, highly irrational.

Hell is simply a place where God isn't. Trust me with the sin that is in the world, if God completely turned away it would be hell on earth. All the evil that is within people's hearts and in Satan and his followers would have unbridled power - God doesn't have to create it.

Sin is a place that God created to separate himself from sin. Everybody sins. Even Christ-followers. The difference between those who follow Christ and those who don't is because Christ-followers are forgiven. That doesn't mean that they don't have to suffer Earthly consequences if they do sin. It also doesn't mean that they won't be accused of what they have done on Judgment day by Satan. It means that God will not focus on the sin that we have asked forgiven from. It also means that God will not judge us according to how much we have sinned to get into heaven. It doesn't take you to do a bunch of good things to get into heaven. All God is looking for is whether or not you believe or if you have let Jesus guide you through your life.

actually, Earth was created for His amusement. Hell was to separate Good from bad. and actually, I think the other religions of the day (such as those which required a child sacrifice often) were crueller.

In the bible you get a description of two places, Heaven and Hell.

You get to chose which of the two you want to go to. The point of being on earth and having religion in your life is so that you know what to do to go to heaven, so by default you know what NOT to do so you don't go to hell.

Chose wisely.

When I was in high school, I went to a church where almost every Sunday the preacher would mention that in his sermon.

"IF YOU DON'T GET SAVED YOU'LL BE CAST INTO HELL!!!!!!! WHERE THERE IS WEEPING, AND WAILING, AND GNASHING OF TEETH!!!!!!!

Talk about lifting the spirits. lol
