FDA says you have to wait 1 year until you can donate blood after getting a tattoo. It's a Federal law not a State law

Speaking from experience, it doesn't matter that you get your tattoo at a place that is certified and uses safe tattooing practices, getting a tattoo is considered risky behavior by the American Red Cross and each time you get a tattoo, you have to wait for a year before you can donate blood.

It takes a year for you to become eligible to donate blood after tattooing. In order to do it, you need a letter from the tattoo shop stating the date that you got the tattoo and that they sterilize all their equipment, as well as their state license number. In addition, most places now want you to take an HIV test. You can get these for free at different health clinics in your state. Once you have the results, you need to get a certified letter from the health clinic stating that you are HIV negative so that they can put it in their records. This way everyone is taken care of--the clinic and you! Hope this helps you out! :)

There's no sinle answer to this as it will depend on where you live. You need to check the regulations where you are.

In the UK you can give blood six months after getting a tattoo, piercing or acupuncture. If it's been between six months and a year, they do an extra test on your blood for added safety. After a year they treat you like any other donor.

Hope this helps!

I got turned down at the Red Cross the other day for this. There are 3 states that have state-wide tattoo regulations. If you are not tattooed in one of these three, it is 12 months.

I think it's at least a year, but I don't remember. If you have paperwork from your tattoo artists/studios verifying that they are certified (i.e. they use sterile needles, etc), then you can present that when you go to give blood, and you should be allowed to give. The laws about this may differ from state to state. In California, I believe it is a year.
