I was engaged @ 10 months before I got an engagement ring. We got the wedding rings right before we married.

I received a beautiful engagement ring when he proposed to me, but we are waiting to get wedding bands. Other than wanting platinum bands, neither of us knew at the time of the proposal what style band we would want later on so we have held off (we will also have been engaged for about 2 years once we actually get married). If your engagement ring was purchased from an established jeweler, they should be around when you are ready to pick out bands. Keep in mind that bands can be either custom-made or altered to go with your ring. Even if it takes some looking, you'll find what you like in time. Some couples upgrade engagement rings at a future point, add or substitute a band with an anniversary/eternity ring, need to eventually get a piece re-sized/repaired/embellished and you may give your engagement ring or band (or both) to your son or daughter, especially if you have purchased an upgraded replacement.

When getting engaged and later married, it is better to buy the whole set including the wedding bands and engagement ring at one time. Most jewelry stores sell a three ring set which contains the engagement ring, and both the male and female wedding bands. I recently bought my fiancee an engagement ring which cost $1000 only to have to replace it with a new set containing an engagement ring which costs about $1400 altogether.

My husband bought my engagement and wedding ring at the same time. He gave me the engagement ring and kept the wedding ring until the day of the wedding. Of course, he forgot the ring on our wedding day and had to drive across town to get it.

I've been married twice, and recently broke up a 3rd engagement. Every time, I got the engagement ring from my guy when he proposed, and we shopped together for the wedding bands. It's probably better to wait until it's closer to the wedding date to actually purchase wedding bands, because believe me..it's REALLY hard not to put those babies on and leave them on! LOL (and yes, as someone else mentioned, I heard it was very bad luck to wear the wedding bands until the wedding ceremony)
By the way..congrats! :o)

My engagment ring was also my wedding ring. My husband wanted to be able to spend more money on my ring by having only one ring. Also it is my husband's family tradition that the wife was only to get one ring. My mom didnt get an engagement ring, and she made her and my dads wedding rings out of a nickle(true, she used a spoon to drill a hole in the middle of the nickle. It took her 3 month to do each ring). It's all a matter of what is important to you.

An engagement ring is given by him when he asks you to marry him. You buy each other wedding bands to exchange at the wedding ceremony.

Well, since we had a long engagement, I got the engagement ring and then on our wedding day, the wedding band.
It really depends on 2 things, what your budget is and what you both feel is the best thing for rings!

My fiance is Coptic Orthodox. In his church there is an engagement ceremony. At that time you exchange wedding bands and wera them on your right hand. Then, during your wedding ceremony you switch them to your left hand. In modern American society usually the guy buys a girl an engagment ring. You can either buy a set with both or purchase each seperately.
