Start > Run and type
msconfig
and hit enter, go to the Startup tab, and uncheck any items you don't want autostarting. If you're not sure what to uncheck email me and I can assist.

Click Start,
Then from the menu, click "Run".
In the new window thats just come up type msconfig and press ok.
A new window will appear.
You will see some tabs and one with the word startup on the very right. click that.
It will show you a list of programs which load once your computer has loaded into windows. If you know what programs are starting up, and what there called, un-tick the box relating to that program and click ok. that program will now stop from loading up when your computer next loads into windows. You might also want to check the Start Up, folder by double clicking the "Startup" text in the Start menu. and delete the programs from there if there is any.
When i say delete programs, it will simply delete the shortcut which it loads the program from. IT wont delete the program!! just the shortcut.
SO YOUR SAFE THERE.
Also do a disk defragment.
and a spybot scan on your computer for spyware, and a adaware check for adverts.
hope that helps in some way :P

Several possibilities:
Look at each offending program's properties (May be in tools-options or similar) and see if there is an option to load when windows starts. De-select this option.
Run MSconfig using start-run, go to start-up tab and cancel some of the autostarts; be careful you don't stop something important like anti virus. next start you will get a nag screen, but you can set a "don't show this again" option.
Can you use Hibernate instead of shut-down? My PC takes about 60 seconds to power down normally and 180 seconds to re-start. Using Hibernate (Start-Turn off computer- SHIFT+click on standby) this is about 10 seconds and 40 seconds

Go to this page and download Advanced Windows Care.
It's free and very good. Even in the free trail version.
It'll make you choose what programmes to run at start-up. Most start up files are not necessary and just using resources in the back ground.
Good luck.

Start/All Programs/Startup...
This folder contains shortcuts to a lot of those programmes.
Delete them.
You're only removing the shortcuts, not the programmes themselves - you can still start them manually when you need them

I use startup guard. It's free, and let's you choose which programs get loaded and which get blocked from auto loading when you start your computer.
