You could say, "Susie, I am so sorry about your loss. I really don't know what to say, except that I am sorry. If you want to talk, just let me know. I am here to listen."

You can also say "I am thinking of you and your family and I will pray for you." (that is, if you're the praying sort)

If you want to give it more thought, what would YOU want someone to say to you if you were in that situation? If you can think of something comforting and tactful, say it.

Just tell them that if they need someone to talk to you are there ...If they are close to you you can visit them and cook them nice food or try to cheer them up etc take them out once week get them pet or buy small gift etc...But dont treat them differently by having heavy conversation about life or saying youre sorry cos everyone dies and its necessary for them to go through a grieving process just tell them you are there or if close friend make them feel special....I think if u tell them you care and want to be there for them it would help as they wouldnt feel so alone...good luck!! A friend in need is a friend indeed!!

Sometimes saying something is the worst thing and so is saying nothing. Just tell her you're sorry and that you'll be there for her if she needs you. No one can take her pain away.
Just be a friend to that relative.

I lost both of my parents last year within 2 months of each other. There was nothing anybody could have said that would have helped more than just having them there for me to talk to.Just be there for your friend.

I was so sorry to hear about your grandparents death.

This is all you need to say. If your friend wants to talk more, she will.
