If the tooth has broken at the gum-line, then yes, it needs to be extracted as soon as possible. Sometimes if the there is enough structure left and the decay is not below bone level the tooth can be saved- A root canal, build up, and crown can be performed-- but usually when a tooth has broken that badly it is because of massive decay and cannot be saved.

Whether the tooth can be saved or not you need to see a dentist. If the tooth is left in its current condition it will develop an abscess (infection) and cause serious health problems and pain. The tooth needs to be treated!

Hope this helps.

Yes, the root tips are still in there and that is what the dentist would extract. You will definitely want this done before you experience pain with the roots. And it is only a matter of time before you do, as the nerve in the roots is exposed or so very close to being exposed. Then you can develop an infection and abscess, which is not only painful but can also prevent you from getting numb at the dentist, when you go in as an emergency. The acid in abscesses neutralizes a lot of the local anesthetics. So, get in to a dentist ASAP.

If it sheered off completely at the gum line, that means that the pulp has bean exposed. So the tooth will have to be extracted. The procedure is called a root extraction.

Half of the tooth is still there in bone. Obviously your dentist can't force you to have it removed, but I can pretty much guarantee that it WILL become infected and painful at some point... most likely on a holiday or weekend.

Uhm, okay, obviously there's nothing to pull if it's completely out. However, it's probably not COMPLETELY out, so just go see a dentist.
