I am taking an Alaskan Cruise, 7 days, and a 3 day land tour following up into Danali National park via train. Has anyone done this trip before?? I would love to be able to talk with someone about their experience on the ship, their shore excursions, how things went, the weather? We are leaving July 30th and returning August 10th. Anyone have a trip like this?

WE did the Princess cruise line's Alaska cruise tour several years ago. The cruise was great. It was predictably raining in Skagway and Ketchkan but that did not stop our tours; we went in the rain. We did the Mendenhall Glacier tour with a stop at a salmon hatchery. At the next port we did the totem poles park tour; that was nice.

It was also cooler in Skagway and Ketchkan than further north in Anchorage, Denali and FAirbanks. If you want to be comfortable and warm, you will need a jacket and hat/gloves for when you get close to the glaciers because it will be cold . We went in May but it was otherwise sunny and temps in the 70's on the mainland after the inside passage.

We took a bus from Seward to Anchorage and spent a night. Then took the train to Denali , spent a night and then went on to Fairbanks. I think now they have changed the itinerary somewhat and you may go a different way. The train ride was great, great scenery and so was the food and service on the train.

The one problem we had with the cruise was the Denali stop for one night was not enough. The train got to Denali at about 4:00 PM and by the time we got to the hotel and checked in and dinner there was not really time to see much in the park. Then they scheduled us for a turn in the park at 6:00 Am the next morning which rushed us out of the hotel. After the tour was over about 10:30 AM we were dropped back at the lodge but could not use our room as we had checked out. We did go back to the park visitor's center for a while, but there was not time enough for an extended visit deep into the park. We had to be back at the hotel by 2:30 Pm to catch a bus back to the train station.

You will enjoy as Princess has great ships and service.

I've already taken 2 Alaska cruises - both with Norwegian Cruise Line. However, I've been on 7 Princess cruises and they are by far my favorite cruise line. The first time I went we did a Denali land package addition to the cruise - it was great! It is a shame to do an Alaska cruise without going deeper inland and really experiencing the national parks and unique wildlife that Alaska has to offer.

Both times I went were the summer (once in August and once in July) - it was in the low 60's in July and it was low 50's in August. There was daylight outside until about 9:30 or 10:00, so the days are long...but they're great!

You really have to do the helicopter trip that lands on the top of a glacier - it's pricey, but it's an experience you'll never forget.

By the way, if you're looking for a travel agency that knows what they're talking about and has great prices you should use my agent, American Discount Cruises. Their website is http://www.americandiscountcruises.com

I've booked 4 cruises with them already over the past few years.
