There are shows out there with great meaty parts for older women. Steel Magnolias is one of my favorites. I once played an older in Bye Bye Birdie. I portrayed Mama Peterson, I was 21 at the time, but it was really fun! No one of that age auditioned. A lot of the good Brittish farse comedies have roles for older women as well.

Queen Margaret in "Richard III" by Shakespeare. Amanda in "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams. Mary Tyrone in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" by O'Neill. And the ultimate female role: Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" by Albee.

Glass Menagerie, Amanda, if you get the right director.

However, I'll let my ego out for a breath of fresh air. I did a Black Box of a play named "Webs" about 20 years ago. We went out on an extended camping trip right after and I got interested in something else. A couple months ago I sat down and filled it out. Five females, one male. Ages 65 up to 80 for Maw-Maw, 50 and 35 for ebony, 45 and 30 for silk, 18-21 for nephila.

For a woman the mother-in-law's role would suit best if not a mother's or a heroine's !

Shakespeare-wise, in my opinion, the cool adult female role is Lady MacBeth.
