Wish I knew. My aunt died a horrible lingering death from cancer and my grandfather recently went through several months of chemotherapy.
I know christians will claim that god didn't create cancer, but since god is the creator of the universe and everything, I don't see how anyone except him could have. At the very least, he created the things that eventually came to cause cancer, be it humans or nature.
And if he didn't create it, and doesn't want it around, then he should certainly get rid of it.
VW: how does dying a slow, painful, horrible lingering death help someone get closer to god? Don't you think that person might really prefer to be alive and not in pain? And what if that person is already a devout christian? I think that is the kind of ridiculous platitude that turns people away from god rather than to him.

An unspoken belief among many Christians is that a dedicated follower of Christ will be immune to misfortune. Promoters of the health, wealth and prosperity gospel misunderstand the Christian life. Faith in Jesus does not guarantee a life free of suffering.

"Do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you," (1 Peter 4:12).

A comfort-free interpretation of the Bible garbles the truth. That's not how life works. True, Jesus promised that God would help the faithful attain their needs (Matthew 6:25-33). Paul points out that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him" (Romans 8:28).

But these are not ironclad promises that once people become children of God they will no longer have troubles in life. The Bible has never promised Christians an easy time. A Christian must "take up his cross" (Luke 9:23) and follow Christ.

God doesn't "make" cancer.
Some things that do...are bio-toxins created by man. Air Pollution..created by man...Scientists have identified many risk factors that increase the chance of getting cancer. They estimate that about 80 percent of all cancers are related to the use of tobacco products, to what we eat and drink, or, to a lesser extent, to exposure to radiation or cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) in the environment and the workplace
None of these things are "God created"

God doesn't want anyone to die early, painful, or tragic deaths or even die at all; be born with two heads (or a hole in one of them), get killed in war, get cancer... etc. not any of that! He loves us. Even if we never sinned one time, we would still feel the effects of sin on the earth. It insidiously twisted nature itself in a way it was never meant to be. God also gives everyone choice about what they do in their lives even in spite of all of this. He is big on that. He'd rather suffer and die for us than not give us choice and free will. This is an extraordinarily loving thing. He also teaches us what is right. This is also loving. Separation from Him hurts. It hurts God too and He cannot stand to know how we are suffering from what was unleashed on the world. That's why He made a way for us to avoid or escape from all that. God teaches us in His word how to live for our greatest health and benefit. He died to save us from suffering and all that sin brings, i.e. sickness and disease. Hallelujah!!

In the book of Isaiah, God says, "I create good and evil." God is good. God created Satan and the world. God can bring good from evil. All of God's promises are based on "trust" and faith. If what God created was good in the beginning, he can do that again, and he can do the impossible if someone will trust him. He gave free will, but people are unable to trust him more than they trust money. Because people trust in something material that can not do anything good or bad, God is limited, and evil gets passed on to someone who gets cancer. Trust + God = limitless good

There is another question just like yours I have just answered. I'm curious though. When it comes to bad stuff people always point to God being the cause. All the good stuff that happens to them or to others is not important. Why is that?
God allows disease and trials and sometimes He inflicts disease as well. None of these to hurt someone but to help them grow closer to Him. That is His desire. That we seek Him out in time of need. Instead we blame and walk away, being bitter and resentful. If we allow Him to be close, He will show us the good that comes out of sickness and disease.
He will give us the wisdom and strength to get through anything and we will prosper from it. Others will prosper from it as well. To us, we just see the now, but God sees the future and He does care and love us more than we can imagine.

Cancer was caused by the **** we do to our world, which wasn't made by God. Staying out too long in the sun, radiation, smoking, all of this crap.... it has nothing to do with God it's just the really crappy choices humans make.
