Bound's hubby here:

Regrettably, yes ... a child can be injured by a BB gun. The distance from the BB gun, how powerful the BB gun is, and where on the body a child is hit by a BB can influence the degree of injury from a BB. Obviously, anyone hit in the eye by a BB could risk losing sight in the eye. While there is a minimal risk of bone damage, there is a high probability of soft tissue damage ranging from a welt to actual penetration of the skin. Again, this is all subject to the amount of power behind the BB, which is typically nothing more than a steel ball with a copper coating.

About 15 years ago, I had a student that was having BB gun wars with friends, and he was hit by a BB which actually penetrated his skin, his intestines and his stomach ... he had to undergo surgery. On a tangent, but related ... a former student accidently killed a friend with a cigarette butt that was on top of a black powder charge. The point being ... anything that is fired from any type of gun (toy or real) has an inherent degree of potential injury associated with it.

In the situation you describe, there is a potential of injury. It is best that anyone using a BB gun or similar treat that "gun" as if it were a real firearm, and practice safe gun handling ... never shooting at a person or animal and being aware of the area behind the target.

Hopefully, this can address your question and concerns.

Yes. I have been shot by a bbgun...and it hurts! Bad! Depends on many things. Not to mention it could hit you in the eye.

Yes they can. Last year my son and I had his out shooting target pactice and my neighbors dog came over gorwling and snapping at us. so i shot him with a bb. he yelped and took of. so i know he felt that through his fur. And a little girl lost her eye due to getting hit with a bb gun. The reason I let my son get one is all his friends have them but the parents don't watch them or teach them anything, just go out into the woods and shoot. I made my son watch the training video until he knew the rules and we made him a place to shoot safely. With either me or his father with him. bbguns do have a lot of force. they are not a toy.

It is illegal in most states. When I was 11 my 12 year old boyfriend(we were two months apart from birth) started playying with BBguns and then my Mom told the apartment manager, and told them where they all lived and they all got evicted. It broke my heart knowing that my own parent got rid of him. The kid can go blid eaily if he was hit in the eye. They can also break windows. And give him alot of bruises.

YES! Of course they can! My husbands friend had one a few years ago and delighted in shooting everyone at his parties when he was drunk! Many a time my hubby, my sister or myself came home with large welts which sometimes had broken skin from the pellet and also bruising which lasted for days! And it either hurt like nothing else or stung badly! I would not suggest getting one of these for a 9 year old! I know my 9 year old nephew would love one...to shoot his brothers in the butt (or knowing him...the head!)

When I was younger, less intelligent, and more brave I shot myself in the foot to find out.

It hurt a lot. Some BB guns have the ability to break the skin.

Haven't you seen the Christmas Story movie? You can shoot your eye out with a BB gun. Anyway the answer is yes, they can be hurt from across the yard with a BB gun.

It depends on how far it is shot from and what type of pellets are used. If shot close enough with metal pellets, it may seriously injure or even kill a child. With the soft air ones, he/she will just get a sting.

Not all do. Those that repeat the abuse they suffered as a child aren't seeking revenge. They may simply not know why what they're doing is wrong. That said, they still shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.
