to me the sunset IS god - all of nature is made up of the life giving force, but I do not believe in the personified god of the bible.

I somewhat agree with you. About how it's better than a book, not how a sunset proves the existence of a god.

I'm still wondering what exactly seeing a sunset has to do with God. Sunsets are a natural result of the basic mechanics of orbits and conservation of angular momentum, there is nothing particularly miraculous about them.

Well...yes, that is the idea..
That you come to appreciate his creation...then you come to have a knowledge of him.
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

I don't believe that at all.
People have relationships with living things, not with sunsets. People who had a relationship with God wrote the Bible and expressed their experiences.
The sunset is nothing but an assortment of colors in the ultraviolet spectrum. It's not alive.
