It's just too hard to say. The Minoan civilization would have been greater than Greece had they not been wiped out by a huge volcanic eruption. They had technology in stone work and building that wasn't duplicated until the Romans came to power. Our sentient nature, our consciousness, our mind/Being, how that has changed over the time is too hard to say. Some cultures have been more 'enlightened' than others, but the yo-yo effect of recovering from this volcano and that plague and that social movement disquised as a religion have all taken their toll. I'll say that our species is just as 'spiritually' advanced as we were when we emerged from Africa one million years ago.

Over the span of human history debated to be 3.5 to 3.7 million years ago I would say quite a bit. The first human ancestors probably had the 'conscious' of today's animals(worrying about food and reproduction only), then some where in the middle of our development humans start to wonder if there is more than eating/sleeping/f-king and what created us( the idea of Gods and Goddesses arise), then present day more and more humans know that there isn't anything else just vast areas of space we know nothing about. We have no gods, and most of us worry about money. There is no need to worry about food, since it is so accessible. Sex is also very accessible to. We have all this additional time to wonder/worry about family, friends, money, our future.
So with more additional time and resources than we had 5000 years ago, the 'conscious' has evolved immensely.

How do you expect us to measure the conscious?
By volume, mass, or area?
Or do you think we actually have some written sources from 5000 years ago that offer a clear picture back then?
