Mercedes GL is a very safe car. Range rovers have about the same reliability as a Mercedes GL. I would go with the Mercedes GL.

I would go with a minivan - Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. They can seat 7 (optionally 8), and get decent fuel economy.

I've long been fan of Land Rover SUV's, and their legendary off-road prowess has earned them many awards. But I haven't heard too much good about Land Rover (including the Range Rover) reliability. It probably has to do with Ford sticking their noses into Rover's business.

However, SUV's are more unstable than cars or minivans, making them more unsafe - more likely to tip over. Roll-over crashes only account for about 3% of all vehicle crashes, but take more than 30% of all vehicle crash fatalities. SUV's are also a lot more thirsty than a car or a minivan.

From a reliability standpoint, I have to favor the Benz. Daimler-Benz is no slouch when it comes to off-road ability, but less than 5% of SUV's ever leave the pavement (here, in the US. Some estimates are 1%).

Also, consider this: Terrorism isn't cheap. Training, weapons, materials, US Visas, etc. all cost tons of money. More than 60% of the world's petroleum comes from 5 Middle-Eastern countries. Post 9/11, do you really want to drive something that drinks more gas than you need to have?

That being said, I start out recommending either a Honda or a Toyota minivan. Next, I recommend the Mercedes GL 320 CDI. The 320 CDI has a turbo-diesel engine which is more efficient than a gas engine (as diesels tend to be vs. gas engines of similar size). The 320 CDI has EPA estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city, 25 mpg highway. That is remarkable for a 7-passenger SUV, and well within the 18 to 19 (city) / 25 to 27 (highway) mpg of an Odyssey or Sienna. The Range Rover, however, only seats 5 and doesn't even touch the 20 mpg mark.

A study of EPA fuel economy estimates vs. real-world figures shows that on average, gasoline vehicles do worse than estimated, and diesels do better than estimated. That being said, the GL-320 CDI will probably get as much as 27 mpg on the highway!

If you research Land Rover brand, you'll find it's the most unreliable car brand sold in the U.S. (source: Consumer Reports magazine and others). Honestly, I don't know why anyone is willing to fork over so much money for such an unreliable vehicle. And parts and repairs are way expensive as well. Mercedes is not exactly on top of the reliability list either, but it's far better than Land Rover.

Mercedes-Benz has gone through (and still going through) a period where quality and reliability was non-existant. You'll find, their rating in all sorts of quality ranking have placed them at the bottom. I would be afraid to buy one.

I cannot comment on Range Rover as I have no personal experience.

Personally, if I had that much money, I would buy Lexus. Reliability is top notch and as they may not be as rugged as GL ro RR, you won't be going "roughing" anyway.

Mercedes are pieces of trash, they require to much maintenance. They look very nice but are not woth buying. Double R is a much better choice.

you have "to" kids? You can't even spell TWO and your making a decision like this? Better leave that decision to your husband...all you really should be doing is getting a driver..you don't sound smart enough to drive.
