The speaking of tongues at Pentecost was a miracle, so that all that was there could hear it in their native language and be saved. It was never meant to do in a church where it was unintelligible and no one could understand it.

A joint statement by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council admitted: “We are also aware that a similar phenomenon can occur under occult/demonic influence.” (Gospel and Spirit, April 1977, published by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council, p. 12) The book Religious Movements in Contemporary America (edited by Irving I. Zaretsky and Mark P. Leone, quoting L. P. Gerlach) reports that in Haiti ‘speaking in tongues’ is characteristic of both Pentecostal and Voodoo religions.—(Princeton, N.J.; 1974), p. 693; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.

I'm not Penticostal, but I do believe that this is a real phenomenon. I haven't experienced it, but know people who have witnessed it. It isn't specifically a language that someone else uses, but a kind of prayer tongue, I am told. Some people might try to show off, say they're speaking in tongues but they're just babbling.
Everyone has a gift, but we need to be pure and true to God when using it. For example, I have a voice and I sing. I don't "perform" at church though. I participate in the church service to the glory of God without expecting accolades or applause from the other members of the congregation.
Maybe you haven't witnessed speaking in tongues because you haven't been in the company of someone when the Spirit fills them in this way. You might not get responses on this message site from people who have experienced speaking in tongues because they are humble about this gift.

Praying in tongues has at several functions. There is a praying in tongues which the Holy Spirit interceding for you about things you don't know how to pray about. There is a praying in tongues which gives a message of exhortation to the body of believer's. This tongue requires a interpretation. But the reason there is so much confusion about tongues is because it gives the devil a headache. The last thing he wants God's people to discover is the power of tongues. Because it is the Holy Spirit praying the perfect prayer on you behalf, directly to God. You don't have to wait for angels to deliver the prayer, but it goes express mail to God. It is not for Pentecostals, but whatever believer believes he can receive. When the Holy Spirit intercedes for you, He will intercede for you, for unseen danger coming to you or one of your loved ones, and situations which seem hopeless. The Holy Spirit will move for you. I have prayed in tongues for years and it has done nothing but blessed my life.

I do not speak in tongues, but I have seen it done many times. I use to ask the same question..I am sure there are many who do fake it, but I do believe some are sincere. BTW Pentecostals are not the only ones with this gift of the Holy Spirit, many, many Catholics also speak in tongues, we just don't do it as a "show".

this is a very personal question for many people but i will tell you that just from my experience in a charismatic church(several years)....i am convinced that it is fraudulent. there definately is SOMEthing that happens when "the annointing" comes...but i have come to beleive that its not all its cracked up to be.many many people WANT to beleive ...and the power of that longing is powerful!
i have alot of thoughts and experience on this issue and would rather not share any more of it here...you can email me if you would like more input.
all the best :)

After reading about it in the Bible, I am NOT convinced it was done the way they try to do it today. If you look at Acts 2:8, How hear we EVERY MAN in our own tongue. It sounds to me like They spoke in there own tongue and God transformed the voice so that all those people from different places heard EVERY MAN speak in their own language at the same time. Which would seem to me that If say Paul was speaking, he may have heard himself speak his own language while every man heard him in their own languages .
I'M NOT SAYING THAT WAS HOW IT WAS, just that is how I comprehend that verse.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
