Pure and simple, the Axis powers of both WWI and WWII did not have the manpower or material to win the war over the long haul. They both started out their respective campaigns with superior training, tactics, and weapons, and roughly equal numbers to those countries they were at war with.
Over the course of the war, especially in WWII, the entry of the US was a critical tipping point. In Europe, the Germans universally had better equipment, but (Panther tanks, ME 262 jets, MG42 machine guns, etc....) but they were horribly outnumbered. The US built more tanks of one type in less than 2 years (M4 Shermans built from Summer 43 on) than Germany did of all types over the entire war. Add in the incredible ability of the USSR to throw men and equipment at the war, and you get get the picture. Two stats stand out. The USSR built 55,000+ T-34 tanks during the war, and 85% of the men born in the USSR in 1923 died during the war.
In the Pacific, Japan was in an even worse situation in terms or raw materials, industrial capacity, and manpower. They were tied down over the entire Pacific rim as well as China. Sure, they had better trained pilots and aircraft at the start of the carrier war, but after Midway they had no hope of producing enough quality pilots or new aircraft to compete with the US.

The root cause probably was poor leadership on the strategic front. The generals were for the most part good on both sides at the beginning of the war but the national leadership on the part of both Germany and Japan both made horrendous mistakes that eventually cost them the war. The first two that jump to mind are Germany invading France and then Russia and Japan attacking the US so early in the war. In both cases time would have allowed more production of better weapons and considerably better intelligence production.

intelligent people in the axis in WWII knew that they would most likely lose the war as it developed into a two or three front war.
many germans and japanese understood the manufacturing problems that they would have unless a very quick victory could be had.
WWI is a bit different. England was actually pretty close to surrender, but again once they were helped over the hump, they had a tremendous advantage over germany (the allies, not just england).
germany is a landlocked nation that is surrounded by aggressive nations. they actually have a historical fear of encirclement that is almost tribal to them...

Most people are generally good, and don't wish to fight with their neighbors.
When motivated by a small group of people, through lies, and bending the truth, you can get good people to do bad things.
The killing in Austria was one of those events used to create an excuse for war. Even Churchill was believed to have motivated the US into the 2nd war by allowing Germany to sink one of its ships which he could have prevented.
In those days the government controlled the media, the people only knew what they were told by their governments.
But good prevails in the end, as lies cannot pass the test of time.
Its also interesting to see the difference in the view of the wars as taught in the UK and the US.
And just to correct another answer, Canada was in the war long before the US, if the cause is just we do the right thing. Always!

WWII is believed to have been won when the US belatedly joined the Allies & turned the tide.
Remember also that the draft included everyone from 17-75 years old. A large pool of soldiers & the women worked in factories building airplanes & equipment. Americans were willing to sacrifice everything for others.
