a metaphor is when you use one word to mean something else.
Example of a really simple one is: it is pouring cats and dogs. Obviously it isn't really and cats and dogs are standing for torrents of rain.
Metaphors can be more complex in literature where a whole storyline can be a metaphor for something else. An example is many parts of Gulliver's Travels are actually a statement on the politics of England at the time it was written. But instead of coming right out and condemning the government, Swift uses the metaphor to make his point.
