Yes, and Those are not only the police dogs. Dobermans are used for that too. They are actually better at it becuase they are working class breed and were made by a man in germany about a 100 years ago who was a tax collecter and poilce officer, and shepherds are bred for hearding sheep. They just use them more becuase they can handle the cold weather better than dobies, but down south more, they are used more.
They are not always male, yes they are sputrerd, and it would take me a MILLION years to explain how they are trained.
But basically, YOU have to have a mind set on dogs, specific breed of dog, how to do it, and determination.

They are neutered or spayed and that does mean that they can also be female. They are sent to school with there handler. The training to attack or protect is called scholtzen it is German.

No they are not all male, there are plenty of female police dogs out there, they go through special training such as Police Dog Academy, and Schutsund Training.

The other breed is Belgian Malinois, the training is Schutzhund.
No not all of them are speutered, not all are male.
Other breeds used, giant schnauzers, and belgain tervuran, as well a few others.
The most common two are the GSD and Bel Mal, though.
