God, the Father, sent an angel to support and strengthen His Son, Jesus, so that He could endure the agony of the atonement. You need to understand that Jesus and God are two distinct individuals. Jesus is the Son of the Father and was sent by Him to be our Savior by carrying out the atoning sacrifice. Only through His immortal Father could He have the ability to fulfill that mission for all mankind. The Father, in His mercy, sent an angel to strengthen Him for that atonement.

What Exactly do you mean by that?
Like Jesus?
or just why he doesn't show himself and use messengers?
if it is the second one, then, I think it is one of three reasons, you cannot be sure in this field, i think it is that the Lord, our God is too great a being for mortal eyes, he does not want to prove the right religion that way, he wants people to believe in him without their own proof, so that he knows that it is real faith, not just seeing is believing. or the third one, maybe it is because the Lord acts in a strange way, why is it that the Lord does not create ever lasting peace? because Atom and Eve' disobeyed him. why did the Lord allow a hell? So people who have done the worst crimes, like taking a man's life for no reason have a place in eternal Damnation for their unforgivable sins. alas, rejoice, for the Lord, and only he, knows what he is doing

Because that is one of the great mysteries of the Christian Faith. God is God, Jesus is God and the Holy Spirit is God, three separate beings, yet one. Read the Anathesian Creed, it's long, but worth it.
Anaway, there is no human logic way to explain the Holy Trinity other than , they are one in three and three in one.
Sort of like an egg, you can hold an egg in your hand and it is an egg. you can fry that egg in the skillet and when it is on your plate, it is still "an egg" It has 3 parts, shell, yolk and wite, together or apart, it is still considered an egg.
The Trinity assists, works as, protects us as three separate beings, yet one is never stronger less strong than the other 2 parts. God the Father is all powerful, yet, Jesus the Son is all powerful, and still He acknowleges that "All power on Heaven and Earth has been given to me" The Holy Spirit gives us the power and wisdom to pray, yet in Matthew (I think) we are told that denying the Holy Spirit is the ONLY unforgivable sin. Not muder, lying, theft, all those are forgiveable is forgiveness is asked for. But denying the Spirit is unforgivable, of course by denying one, we deny all three.
When I was in Sunday School it drove me nuts that Jesus was on the Cross saying "Eli Eli Lama sabacthoni" -- "My God My God Why have you forsaken me" when HE WAS and IS God....who exactly was he yelling at.
And the miracle of Easter...God was dead, Jesus was Dead on Friday and he defeated death and rose on Easter morning. But if they were 3 beings (not persons) Jesus the Son was dead, but God wasn't and raise HIm. But we know Jesus raised HImself from being dead.
No one ever said it isn't confusing, but it is that 3rd being who allows us to beleive even though we don't understand. I don't understand electricity, but I am not going to sit in the dark until I figure it out!
So in answer to your question, at that time, God dispatched an angel to strengthen His son, Jesus. And believing in the miracle of the empty tomb will allow us to go to heaven one day and have it all explained to us.

It wouldn't make sense if Jesus were God. How can a mere angel strengthen Almighty God?

Because He was God in human flesh and a body of flesh is heavy and weak compared to the spirit (mind, will, emotions)and soul (energy, power to act, source and essence of who and what you are), especially with all the sins of everyone who has and will ever live in and on His manifested body.... so He had to strengthen "Himself." It hurt Him to give us life, but it hurt Him more to be separated from us for any length of time. God loves us more than we can comprehend.
I believe in One God, so the "son" was sent as an example for us to follow. How could we know fully how to relate to the Father if He was only a non-physical spirit to us? He made an aspect of Himself flesh so that we could see Him, hear Him, write his teaching and die for our sins to get rid of the separation of sin between Him and us. It was so He could get all of this accomplished. We are His children. (If we so choose and more than His creation). He is our Father and more than our God for those that want to/will receive Him.

The voice of the Lord would be too much for us to bear and would likely kill us, and thus why he dispatches angels or messengers.

The Almighty (or all powerful) never needs to be strengthened. He is the source of all power and all strength.
His son, though mighty, needed strength from his Father.

Jesus was as we are when He walked upon this earth a human being, but without sin. There have been times that there have been angels here to protect me. I've never seen them but my life was spared in a couple of incidents that leaves no question about it!<><
