I have a very bad back and will have to have back surgery but need to lose some weight first. My surgeon says that my back is too unstable for any exercise so how am I supposed to lose weight just by dieting alone?????

Hi, even with a bad back you should be able to go to the pool and any excersize done in the water is great.

Also I bed it would be ok for you to walk and walking is a very good way to maintain fitness and lose weight.

With your reduced activities you will have to be very careful of what you eat if you are wanting to lose weight.

My suggestion to you would be to start out the day with fruit, eat as much as you like anytime in the morning (of only fruit) then at lunch have a vegetable soup with a salad (only home made dressing) and for dinner perhaps a small portion (4 ounces) of chicken or fish with vegetables and rice or potato.

You can snack between meals if the snacks are fresh vegetables.

Drink lots of water, 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces.

Eating this way you will lose weight and maintain your health.

Oh an another thing you could do is find somewhere that you can get into an infrared sauna. 30 minutes in an infrared sauna gives you the same cardiovascular work out as jogging for 30 minutes would.......burns off the same amount of calories as well.

Are you allowed to walk? I'd suggest going for longer walks in the evening to settle down, if necessary you could always pick up a fallen tree branch and use it as a cane of sorts. Also, perhaps consider picking up a pilates video-- this will improve your core strength over time and if nothing else, will help your back prior to the surgery.

Losing weight is 75% what you eat and 25% exercise. Eat a lot of high protien foods and stay away from high carb items.
