He is 25 and an alcoholic and is prone to unpredictable and violent outbursts. He lives with my mom and last night he flipped out at about 3am because she wouldn't give him cider. He beat her up and smashed up the house (and there is a 1 year old baby, my sister's living there too although he didn't go near her). I called the police and my sister warned him that they were coming and he headbutted her and ran away. The police came and found him but my mom doesn't know what to do as she is scared of what would happen to him if he went to prison, and he has nowhere to go if she kicked him out of home. My dad passed away a year ago. My brother went to rehab once but drank while he was there and after 3 weeks they said his treatment was finished, there was no follow up and the social worker doesn't want to know, she said "what can I do about it?". He was meant to go to counselling but he said it was no good and stopped going. He doesn't work, just sponges or steals money from my mom

When he goes to trial for assault, tell the judge that he is violent and has hurt your mother and sister. Ask the judge to order him into detox and a 28 month drug rehab program, and ask the judge to require that he complete both programs successfully...or go to prison.

Most guys that have become addicts have done so as a result of losing their self-respect and belief they are worth anything in life.

You should do some research yourself for a rehab clinic which gets results on individuals where less than 10% reversion rate occurs and talk it over with them. Normally they have people available who've come off alcohol or heavy drugs themselves and know what to do in these instances.

They're sure to be able to find out the exact moment where the guy fell off the waggon and get him back on again!

The best thing is to get him some SERIOUS help!
Jail isn't the only answer for someone like that but in some cases, like this one, it might be the best thing. if the police were called they have record of his behaviour. Anytime he comes by the home around family enraged or drunk, call the police. being violent towards your sister was assult and that alone is enough to have him put in jail.

People like your brother only get real help when they're ready for it, and obviously for some reason, he is on his own path of self-destruction. Family can only do so much.

Mom needs to understand that he is abusing you all. Call the police. Let him go to jail. He needs to dry up either by sitting in jail or getting into detox. Let your mom know that if he ends up in jail at least he is not drinking or abusing. He has food and a roof over his head along with clothes. In time he can get visits too. I am a mom and my son went to jail for drug addiction then got out used again went in and out of detoxes until it finally worked. Mom needs to stop enabling him. So what if he sleeps out side. She can still feed him. I did with my son. Good luck and try to convince her of how serious this is.

Okay, for starters, if he is a danger to society, he needs to be removed from it until he no longer poses a danger. People can get rehab in jail, and while it's not an ideal recovery situation, you can't drink while you're in jail.

Also, he is a grown man. He needs to take care of himself, 25 is way too old for such reliance on his mother, no matter how sorry she feels for him, or how guilty she will feel.

He may have to go to jail for a short time or else the court will order him to get treatment. For your mom's safety he needs to be out of the house.
