Most reputable tattoo artist and piercer will not mod anyone who is currently pregnant due to the potential risks that can occur that will effect both mother and baby.

However if you are speaking of lets say getting a tattoo at 20 and having a kid at 30 there wouldn't be any problems. The only thing that could happen is that if the tattoo is done on your stomach or breasts, it may stretch and disfigure during and after pregnancy but there wouldn't be anything from the tattoo that would harm the baby.

Most tattoo artists will not work on you if you are pregnant or nursing. It is not recommended to get a tattoo or have it removed while pregnant or nursing.

The main concern with getting a tattoo during pregnancy is the risk of contracting an infection, such as Hepatitis B and HIV. Although the risk is small, it is recommended that you wait to get a tattoo after your baby is born.

You will be very interested to know that little information is available about the safety of skin dyes used for tattooing during pregnancy. It is possible that the chemicals in the dye may affect the development of the baby during the first 12 weeks, but the risks are unknown, as are any effects on the baby during the remainder of the pregnancy.

Some women may have also heard that if they have a tattoo on their back, then they will be unable to get an epidural. Very few studies have been done on the risks that could exist for women who have back tattoos and receive an epidural. So far none of these studies have conclusively found any data that shows that there are risks, so most anesthesiologists have no problem giving an epidural to a woman with a back tattoo. If you want an epidural and have a tattoo on your back, it still would be best to contact the hospital and find out the policy in regard to tattoos and epidurals.

The risk of contracting an infection is small, but you could pass the infection to your baby if you are breastfeeding. Ultimately it's your decision, but you may want to wait until you are not breastfeeding to get a new tattoo

There are a few things you can do before trying medication if you wish, but they will make your life more complicated while you get started. The first is to remove all foods with additives from his diet. There was a recent study that actually showed a causal link between food dyes and ADD. There are websites, I'm sure, that will give you good advice on how to start that, but I'm not sure where they are. Try a good search engine for that. The other thing, less restrictive, is try cutting sugar and caffiene from his diet. My daughter is ADD and can't have sugar unless she's going to go run it off somewhere. But she's always done okay in school, and in fact I had to get her re-evaluated in the third grade because her teachers didn't believe me because she wasn't a school problem. Caffiene, on the other hand, tended to calm her down. My nephew was the opposite. Sugar didn't affect him but caffiene sent him climbing the walls. So my advice, try diet and get him a lot of exercise every day. However, if that doesn't work, medication is still an option that has really helped a lot of children and adults.

I think the only way a tattoo would affect your blood is if it got infected. And I think the only way it would affect a fetus is if you got pregnant while the tattoo was infected.
Infected tattoos are pretty rare, as long as you follow the artists' aftercare instructions. Once the tattoo is healed, it's just regular skin, but now it's colorful and has a design on it. It doesn't even feel any different than the rest of your skin.
One way I guess it "affects" your blood is if you are a blood donor. You aren't allowed to give blood for at least 6 months after getting one (but that is the same for piercings and immunizations)

As long as you go to a reputable artist, it's fine. If you go to someone who doesn't practise proper sterilization techniques, then you run the risk of contracting a blood borne pathogen (Hep C, for example) which would not only affect your future baby, but you as well.

Laura, how do you know we don't have any medical training? If you need any piercings, come see me, I'm a Professional piercer and paramedic (and I always use universal precautions for blood, unlike many nurses and doctors I know)

As long as you are going to a reputable tattoo artist who uses sterile equipment - it won't affect your blood. Tattoos also have no bearing on the health of future children.

During pregnancy, you have the possibility of slower healing time and bleeding out the ink.
Also, a tainted tattoo needle or contact in a tatt parlor, can harbor hepatitis. That is a def. problem for you and an unborn child.

Possibly, there is a risk of getting a disease from a tattoo shop. This depends on if they have clean needles and keep things sterile. I personally would not put any trust in these people who do not have a medical background. Everytime you stick yourself you are exposing yourself to potential hazards. Why take the risk if you dont have to. Remember tattoos are forever, do you want to live with that scar forever (yes it is a scar) and what you might think is cool now might not be in 20 or 40 years, and you skin then will be wrinkled and move. Ever see a good looking 40 or 60 year old with a tattoo? I havent... just my two cents
