When did your kids start going to the dentist? My son is on Medicaid in Missouri and his primary care physician recommended he begin going to the dentist. I have heard that starting a child at one year of age is a good idea. However, when I called my Medicaid provider for my son, they informed me that he should not go until he is three years old.

What do you think?

Around three is a good time. However, you are really your kids first dentist. Make sure you show them the proper way to brush their teeth. Make a game out of it. Get them in the habit of looking forward to brushing early. It will pay off in the future.

My dad is a dentist and he suggests at a year they should go in and get their teeth "counted". My 2 year old went in last year and he had said that the visit is just to see if their teeth are growing in properly and how they look since at 1yr olds they are already started on juice. My oldest daughter now 5 didn't go in until she was 2 1/2 and she had already had a little cavity.(oops) If your ins. won't pay for it it usually only costs about 40-50 dollars. Otherwise as long as you brush his teeth every day he should be fine until he is three.

My daughter's 1st visit was at the age of 18 months. They tried to take x-rays but she wasn't cooperative. The "cleaning" amounted to brushing her teeth because they said she was too young for the fluoride treatment (not ready to let the fluoride stay on a few minutes before spitting it out). The dentist counted her teeth, looked for cavities (very quickly) and checked the shape of her bite. She had her 2nd visit at 2 years old and it went pretty much the same way.

I don't think the dentist is necessary unless you think your child might have potential problems. The main reason I took my daughter is because I'm anal about oral hygiene and she had insurance.

When my son was younger (he's 8 now), the rule was at age 3 years. Now, I think dentists want to see children around their first birthday. I don't think it will hurt you to wait until 3 years as long as you take the normal precautions...no soft drinks, brushing after eating sweets, not too many fruit juices, etc. My son has never had a cavity yet, and his dentist says that he's because he doesn't like soda and won't drink it.

My sons pediatrician says 3 yrs old is the best time to get them to the dentist.
He has had a toothbrush and paste since he was around 2. To get him in the habit of brushing his teeth.

I asked the same question on my pediatrician when I took my son in for his 12 month check up...she said 3 years old is when they should start going.

My dentist doesn't take children until 3 years old. My niece just went for her first checkup a couple weeks ago in fact, and she is 3.

Erm... taking care of the sugar intake of your child is more important than going to see dentist. Only my suggestion. Try not to give more sugar try sugar free drinks...

I only bring my child whenever they have fully grown milk teeth. I mean all the teeth are out.

Cheers

yes, my daughters pediatrician said at one year is the best time.
Heck I've seen 2year olds with their rotted out of their heads already, so I'd just make an appt with someone who will take your son that young and accepts Medicaid.
