Every breed is different. Most breeds usually go into heat for two weeks, twice a month. My dogs particular breed only goes into heat once a year though. I am not sure what breed you have but the chances are that it's twice a year. If you are not planning to spay her then you may need to diaper her because some dogs have a heavy flow. The easiest way to do this is use boys underwear, insert a maxi pad, and put tail through the hole in the undies. If you are not planning to breed her do not let her out because other males will jump your fence, or dig under, to get to her. You are able to spay while she is in season. Vets charge a bit more for it but you can get it done at a low cost clinic for pretty cheap. Those are easily found by contacting your local spca or humane society. Good luck.

The are not just like humans! Dogs are much different than Humans.
There are 3 stages that I'll give you average lengths for....
1. Proestrus. This is the stage when the female is going into heat but will not allow males to breed. Length=9 days.
2. Estrus. This is where the female will accept males and be bred.Length=9 days. In most giant breeds (Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, St Bernard’s, ect.) a yearly estrus is common.
3. Diestrus. The dog is no longer receptive and is going out of estrus but you should keep her away from males during this period if you do not want her to be bred.
4. Pregnancy. Average length (counted from first day of breeding)=58-66 days.
5. Anestrus. This is the resting phase between the menstral cycles. Length=5-7 months.
Some Important Points:
* You should consider your pet to be "in season" for 21 days: 7 days coming into heat, 7 days in heat, 7 days going out. Though conception is most likely during the middle 7 days, Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules. Confine your pet for the entire 3 weeks.
*A puppy can get pregnant her first cycle. Scary but true, similar to humans which can get pregnant at like 15 years old and such. Ideally she should not be bred until about 24 months when she is out of adolescence.
*Females do not go through menopause though sometimes there may be a cessation in heat cycles for a period of time and then they can start back up again. As a female ages, her fertility does drop off but she will not go through menopause as humans do. It is also possible for senior dogs to become pregnant. Dropping off of fertility with age does not mean she cannot become pregnant.
* Spaying before six months is recommended before a female begins to enter sexual maturity. Some vets will spay younger and spaying of puppies as young as eight weeks old who are up for adoption in shelters is becoming more popular. Juvenile spaying will completely eliminate the risk of your pup being one of the odd dogs to come into heat younger than average or you missing the onset of a cycle.

Well before I spayed my female She would go into heat every 3 months. So it all depends on the dog herself. Some Female's come in to heat 1 time a year lucky them. And sometime they come in to heat more then once. Breeding a female is a lot of responsibility. If you are going to breed her (not saying you should or shouldn't) But check with your breeds National and Local breed clubs, as well as your vet, read up on the issue of breeding, heat, & spaying, and make the best choose for you and your female dog, ask your breeder when her Dam (her mother) comes into heat. Ask about when her aunts, sister, and cousins come into heat, normally the breeder can tell you this and most times they come into heat around the same time. However, Remember if you do intend to use your female in breeding, you should read up on the health issues in your breed are and do the health test need to be done, you should wait till your female is at least 2 years old, plus you will have the responsibility of taking back any puppies at any time for whatever reason.
If you are asking about heat times because you want to wait to spay your female after her first heat and before her 2nd heat. You should give her at least 2-3 months after female has had her heat to spay her. You can spay her when she is in heat. however the surgery process is longer and their can be some complications during the surgery while you are spaying your female and she is in heat.
Just my opinion about dog's being in heat/breeding/spaying/ect. This is all information I listened to and thought about before breeding/spaying my female.
The sources below gave me some great help, and a few of them I looked up info.

You can go to pet smart and get a book on youre breed and that should tell youu relativly close what you can expect. My pug was 6 months and a 2 week heat my chi was 6 months and a 3 week heat. But it is on and off one week spotting and one not. Also ask youre vet and keep her locked up and away from the boys they will know befor you.

Most bitches go into heat twice a year. However, this depends on the breed. More primitive breeds that haven't been modified by humans too much go into heat in the late fall or early winter, just like their wolf cousins.

It depends on the dog. There's no set rule for this question, just like humans, all dogs are different. You may want to talk to your vet about this and let them give your dog a complete check-up.
