Tony was arrested for having"hollow point buttets" in a handgun. First by the locals and then by the FBI. What's this? Is it illegal to own hollow point bullets?

In most of the US, hollowpoints are fine. In fact, they're safer than ball ammo for personal defense because they're less likely to overpenetrate and hit an innocent bystander.

But the Sopranos takes place in New Jersey, where the legislature has decided that hollowpoints are somehow evil and has made them illegal.

First of all, TV shows are not a great source of truthful information. Don't bet on it being correct. Second of all, it depends on the laws of the area where you live in. In the area of California where I live it is perfectly acceptable to own hollow point bullets, but it is near imposable to get a conceal carry license. However if you want to be sure if it is ok to have hollow point bullets for your firearm contact your local police department and they will inform you of the laws of your area. If you do live in an area where hollow point bullets are indeed banned then look into frangible ammunition. This ammunition is good for self defense because the bullet disintegrates on impact and all the energy of the round is transferred into your target just like a hollow point. However please check with your local law enforcement first.

Unless the bullet is fully jacketed, it will expand to some degree. Hollow points just expand the most and the quickest. In some areas they're illegal, which is dumb in my opinion. Other bullets will be just as lethal if well placed.

Hollowpoint bullets are illegal in New Jersey, unless you're Law Enforcement.

a hollow point bullet is a bullet with the tip hollowed out (shocker!). at impact, the bullet collapses and spreads out, inflicting major damage. not sure about the legality though (its different in different areas/states)

As pointed out, hollow-point bullets are illegal in New Jersey (criminal OSHA maybe?) There is no Federal jurisdiction though, so having the FBI get involved is just anti-gun propaganda.

Well did Tony have a license for the pistol? It really depends on the area of where Tony was caught and the laws in Tony's area.

Go to college. Get a degree in Criminal Science. Apply for a job. Get job. Earn trust. Reclaim bullets. Quit. The End.

In New Jersey they are.

In other non-communist places where people are free, they are allowed to have hollow-point bad-guy stoppers.
