Then we would all be free from having to live our lives according to God's standards. It's really a heavy burden when all your actions have eternal consequences. But then, it also means our lives may not have any significance at all. At least that's what I got from the first chapter of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera.
I think people can still find significance in their lives by contributing to something lasting, or to some collective effort. At least your life will impact someone else's, which will impact someone else, etc etc etc. Then it doesn't matter whether God pays attention to us or not.

There is a famous saying, respecting a little learning being a dangerous thing!
Some who have spent some time looking into it feel, rather: what if God had a plan, saw everything, made the perfect way to buy it all back, and felt every hurt that his creation was subjected to, or subjected themselves to, but knew that he must stick to His plan so that all could benefit?
A really lame analogy I like that might help is, you're standing in the kitchen, surrounded by starving people; you are cooking, but it's not ready yet. Everyone is groaning, and there are even some people saying you are a bad provider, and cant cook!
Do you serve the food, undercooked and not nourishing, or do you tell everyone to hang on! It's coming, they can smell the dish, can't they? They saw you preparing it, right? You have fed them before, so you'll do it now, right? And if they just hold on a little longer, they'll get the best meal ever!!!
Look at the world around us and imagine no war, no death, no sickness; we can imagine what it could do if it were restored, right? Doesn't it seem like a loving gift, from a loving father? Not to mention for those who read the scriptures, the incredible sacrifice we know this loving father and his son made out of the special love they have for us!!!
Okay, now I gotta go eat....

Are we not a real creation? If we were a "side-effect" of something else would he not let us be here still if he were unpleased with what he saw? After death you will go somewhere, where you go is up to how you believe in the Lord and what he says. My God is a god who loves all his creatures from ants to cats to humans. If you are one who gets unnoticed it would be because you failed him on earth for what he asks and will be thrown into the lake of fire.

Wow, i would feel completely worthless when compared to his 'greater' creations. Although i don't know your intentions, this would be a poor allusion to Christianity, as we had a messiah sacrificed for the sake of a spiritual reconnection to God. Its an interesting take on the afterlife, though...

The real question is not what if..., but can we know God? The answer to that is, I believe, only in so much as he has revealed himself to us. If God has revealed himself and his intentions to us than we can know something of what his plans are.
As a follower of Jesus I have answers that I believe are relevant to answering this question, but ultimately each one of us must seek out our own answers.

"A God who takes absolutely no notice of us" ? Is that a different God to the one that took absolutely no notice of the Holocaust ?

This is a perfectly acceptable postulation. It would explain the creators indifference to our actions on earth, satisfying both theist and atheists claims. Both would be right, but both would be wrong also. Good question.

Have you ever read the bible? Honestly. God sent Jesus done here so we would be able to come back to God in Heaven, and live with him in paradise.
Saying that he doesn't give a **** about us, is saying that a Mother doesn't give a **** if her son doesn't return from war.
Parents who really love their children, are the ones that act like God in away, because he does give a ****, and wants us to be careful, and have a happy life. DUH.
