No, although your 'cause' is a valid point.

Speaking as an Atheist, your reasoning is a contributing factor. Everyone preaches in the Ten Commandments and then most people lie, cheat and steal almost on a daily basis. People lie all the time and there are more cheaters in this world than ever now.

The main reason Atheists are growing in numbers faster than ever has to do with logic. Logically, we believe there can't be a god watching me type this and watch you read it at the same time. Additionally, it is my belief that god was made up to scare people into behaving. Back in the day the thought was "don't murder or steal or god will get you". In today's world, we have police and jail time to prevent folks from commiting these crimes. It doesn't always work but it is far more effective than the wrath of god.

To me, religion was invented in ancient times as a way for people to get rich. Priests back in the day used to get paid to forgive sins. "Give me 2 sheep and 2 barrels of grain, and I will forgive your sins". Religion was all about profit and scaring folks into behaving. The same tactics just don't cut it anymore here in 2007.

Are you saying that hypocritical Christians are directly causing atheism (The belief that there is no God)? What about Judaism and Mohommadism? They're monotheistists and believe in one God (Yahweh or Allah)...and don't they have their fair share of hypocrites too?

To answer your question, no, I disagree.

The number one cause (as if it were a disease, LOL) of atheism is that it's just an easier option in the society we have today.

A Christian (however imperfect) knows he or she is supposed to behave a certain way, do or not do certain things, and to the best of his or her ability, try and behave as closely to what Christ would desire as possible. That's a tough thing to do in today's world, and people frequently fall short, and when they do, they feel bad about it.

An atheist doesn't have to worry about any of that. All he/she has to worry about is obeying the law of the land and keeping his/herself happy -- and that's a whole lot easier way to live than having a whole heap of extra stuff you have to worry about on top of that.

No, the number one reason is that there's no evidence for the existence of a god.

But what you cited is certainly on the list. Even if I were to consider Christianity, the actions of the creationists and the anti-abortionists would drive me away. As would people like Wolfeblade (above), whose thoroughly dishonest response is a great example of irony. Nicole (below) is another example, repeating that same lie. Don't you guys ever get tired of telling that one? You're not convincing anyone at all - you're just not that good at lying. Sorry.

Wholeheartedly, I agree. Like those that celebrate Christmas even though it isn't about Christ. And those that go to church on Sunday, even though Jesus observed the Sabbath. They aren't Christians, they are just following the herd. They advocate something they know nothing about, and when they advocate it, they make no sense. Thus, atheism becomes more sensible.

I believe this to be a partial truth. It is the nature of man to be hypocritical. I saw on this very forum today a so called peace loving buddhist who wants all guns destroyed and banned, yet in the very next question she can't wait to be physically violent to those that have different beliefs than her.
It is the nature of man to be rebellious and prideful and some, no matter how many compassionate, honest and loving Christians they meet, they will still want things their own way, they will still exhalt their own ideas above what is truth and themselves above others.
Christians behaving in an unchristianlike manner makes it harder but in the end it is just an excuse that really holds no water. This is not an excuse for Christians to behave badly , but we are all sinners and we all fall- an atheist expecting perfection out of a Christian because they call themselves Christian is just an excuse to exhalt themself even more.
The fact is no matter how people behave, saved or not, God never changes, He makes himself evident and when it comes to being accouintable for our choices we will be accountable to God and will not have others to blame when the truth was evident and we refuse it.

False pride in their own intelligence and wisdom. It's a reason as old as time itself. I will agree though that hypocrisy doesn't help matters, it just fuels their belief that they know something that Christians don't. In the end though, they will not be able to blame anyone else for their choice to reject Christ. The 'blame game' is also as old as time itself (ie. Adam & Eve). Everyone will be held individually accountable for their decisions, because everyone will have many opportunities to come to the knowledge of the truth of God's word.

No, Chris, not based on what I've seen around here. The number one cause of atheism is intellectual pride that blinds people to the truth of Jesus Christ. They place their own so-called intelligence above the truth of God and refuse to even consider the possibility that there is Someone greater than they are and to Whom they owe obedience.

Christians who behave badly certainly rank up there as a leading cause of turning people off to Christ. But false pride in one's intellect would have to top my list of reasons why people reject God.

No, it's education, understanding of that education and logic. Hypocrisy is only a part of what turns people off, and generally some actually turn to another religion or find another branch of Christianity before becoming atheist a good percentage of the time.

No, I think the number one cause of atheism today is logic.

Possibly it is a large contributing factor, but I think Knowledge is the main driving force behind any disbelief in god/s and religion.
