My hubby is a bigger guy, with lots of muscle and probably a bit of fat too! whenever he gets tattooed, his skin swells really bad, and they usually have to do it in 2 or more sessions. He's going to get his armpiece worked on this week, but is wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what could help keep the swelling down in the first place, so that the artist could finish the tattoo in one go?

it all depends on the person. some people are just swellers. my feet swole both times but that is expected. out of all of the work i have had done on my back it has only swolen once, i believe due to the large grouping of needles that was used, it just seemed particularly traumatic to my skin. if he takes anti-inflamatorys before it could thin his blood. afterward he can put ice on it to keep the swelling down but if the artist isn't comfortable with finishing due to swelling then there is really nothing that can be done.

What happened technically is multiple traumatic injuries that occurred (the needles stabbing you). It's normal to have inflammation in the area which includes swelling.
- Make sure your tattoo is covered, including with a thing towel
- Mold a loose bag of ice around the involved area for 15-25 min or until pain or numbness from the cold occurs
- Do this 3-5 times a day with 2+ hours in between application for the first 3 days.

Remember the use of cocoa butter and aloe on the tattoo can help heal the skin a little faster.

Everytime I get a tattoo, my skin does the same thing. My tattoo artist can never finish in one session due to how swollen my skin gets. He said it has to do with your blood cells. Did you figure out why it happens to your husband ? I'm curious to know so I know how to prevent it

You're having a sharp needle rammed into your skin at high speeds. It's going to swell no matter what you do. If the tattoo has a lot of detail in it there's no way it will get done in one sitting.

sometimes ice will take it down but really there's no way from preventing swelling because the area is getting stuck with a needle over and over so it irratates the skin almost plus it goes into the frist layer of skin.

Unfortunatly, there's not much you can do. Just make sure to not drink or eat to much of anything before hand....maybe just a few peices of candy.

After, just make sure to have something cool to place gently on the tattoo. And PLENTY of non-smelly lotion to put on it. Neosporin+pain relief really helped mine - it didn't hurt that bad and it didn't peel.

Good luck! =)

First off it's kinda weird that he gets that swollen. I have 3 tattoos and I didn't get swollen with any of them. Second, has he tried taking an anti inflametory before getting it done?
