Look for what's referred to as a "cocktail" dress... usually something that hits at around knee length in a dressier fabric (satin/silk/or something with a sheen to it). Definitely no white/off white/cream -- you don't want to look as if your'e competing with the Nothing too short or too low-cut -- you don't want to be known as the 'hootchie" of the wedding.

You can wear fancier clothes to an evening, sit down wedding. Black is always appropriate (little black dress) or any kind of dress really, as long as it's not white. You don't need to wear a prom dress or anything, but a nice dress or nice trousers and a pretty blouse would be acceptable.

Dress nicely, but not a formal ball gown. The main thing to remember is that you should in NO WAY appear to be in competition with the bride. Do not wear flashy clothes, do not wear stark white; there are few other rules to worry about so use your common sense.

Ask your boyfriend's uncle's future partner. (I went to a wedding recently where this was solved by one guest being asked to show up in beach gear and another in white tie and tails. The rest of us fitted in between. The groom wore a kilt and the bride a medieval gown, in case you were wondering..)

You should wear high heels. Wear bright colors, no white though. Either an elegant dress or a nice sweater with a skirt.

Don't wear all white for sure. I'd recommend a skirt or a nice dress, if you are wearing a strappy dress bring a sweater too. Nothing too short, and wear nice heels.
