First you need to get as much information as you can from your family about your grandparents.

If you know the names and dates of birth of your grandparents then you should be able to trace back a couple more generations fairly easily using ancestry.co.uk.

You need to subscribe to this site. Even though I'm a subscriber I can't honestly remember how much it costs, but I think it's about £50 a year.

Sometimes you can't get all the info you need from ancestry.co.uk and have to buy birth or marriage certificates from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp at £7 a time.

So it's not necessarily a cheap hobby.

There are free sites around, but I can honestly say I have never found a single useful piece of info on any of them - but maybe I'm just unlucky.

To get you started, if you email me with some info about a couple of your grandparents I'll have a look and see what I can find for you.

Traced mine back to the late 18th century, more by luck than anything else. Like it has been sugested ask your parents as i had a suprise of what my father knew, and i was lucky enough to have a great uncle who had traced his side back a long way himself.
Most of my family stemmed from Wales, then emigrated to South Africa and Newzealand, where they loved to keep in touch with their heritage. Try your local library and check the earliest census. When you find one relative, try then to trace them backwards by the next census to their address.
Hope it helps

ask your parents, it's their parents you want information on, so, your parents should be able to give you many details about them.
