I have run into this with two girlfriends, and I get mad as hell that they want to baptise the kid (if we "ever" had one). Maybe it's because they presented themselves as non-religious, then pulled this out, or I don't know. Just wondering if that's a common point of contention...?

Maybe all the rest of you are just smart enough to date real atheists, and I pick posers...

Getting an innocent baby baptised will not change it into a monster or a raving lunatic, it won`t carry any visible marks and apart from the parents the world at large will not even know, so what`s the problem.

while i substitute into recommendations washed via faith in my youth, i substitute into advised (this substitute into in huge-unfold college, while catholic faith learn substitute right into an important area of the curriculum approximately 50 years in the past) that if one discovered somebody who's approximately to die and alter into no longer baptized, _anyone_ would desire to pour water on the top of the guy and utter the 'magic' words "I baptise you interior the call of the father, the son and the holy ghost" and this is complete. Yeah, stupid. yet this is the factor of religion, being stupid. So try this, or do no longer and declare you probably did, makes no frigging distinction, considering that there's no god besides. Or declare that, because of the fact the hot pope has made his urbi and orbi blessing, then each and all of the water on earth is now holy, and because every physique gets some drop while it rains...

I'm agnostic and I would stand my ground at not baptizing a child as it's a meaningless rite. My mother tried to make me get baptized when I was 12, I walked out in the middle of it and I tell you it was well worth the grounding I got. However my father supported my action 100% and he's a Methodist.

Well my hubby is catholic and baptizing our kids was a big thing for him. I'm alright with that, but the baptism is the farthest it goes without the kids deciding their own path. The confirmation and such will be up to them. His whole thing with the baptism is he wanted to do it "just in case", yeah, pascal's wager. He's willing to respect my opinion in how I don't want religion force fed to them all the time and that they can decide which path they want when they're older, so I'm willing to respect his wishes on the baptism.

I wish I could find an atheist to date. I pick girls who I don't think take religion seriously (closest thing to an atheist in my mind) and then suddenly when they find out I'm an atheist the world turns upside-down.

I don't think I would argue the issue though. An extra shower never killed anyone.

no, but my daughter (8) wants to get baptised, and I can't very well tell her "no, you can't" she's very opinionated, and we've always gone to church, even thought I'm agnostic, and my son's athiest. I guess it can't hurt her, but i still feel kinda like she's buying a lie.

Why would you care? Since you believe there is no God, baptizing the baby won't hurt anything. However, it might mean the world to your wife.

My fiance is actually much more vocal about his disbelief than I am, so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want any children of ours baptized.

I would not worry about it, every kid needs a wash job every now and then.
