It would be the best decision the government has made in 25 years.
There has NEVER been a case of someone overdosing on marijuana, so you have to agree that it is safer than alcohol, you cannot argue that fact.
The amount of people jailed from marijuana related charges is ridiculous considering the above statement. Keep in mind that the US spends $30,000 per inmate.
The revenue could be taxed and it would generate enormous revenue. Companies like Marlboro already have a plan worked up for the sale of marijuana, it is called Marlboro Gold. But considering it can be grown virtually anywhere in the US the revenue would be relatively limited.
To say it would reduce the power of drug cartels is a bit much considering a decent portion of marijuana is grown in the US. Drug cartels make money off of hardcore drugs like cocaine and heroin.
Pot is not a "gateway" drug. People know drugs are illegal and do them anyway, if pot was legal the same people would do the same drugs, making substances illegal does not stop drug use. Unlike what some people would lead you to believe people don't do pot and say wow drugs aren't that bad lets smoke some crack, that simply isn't how it works. People know what drugs are highly addictive and most don't use them.

I doubt legalizing marijuana would be a good thing or that it would keep people from moving on the harder drugs since it is so easy to get anyway. I guess the IRS would be able to tax it and tax dollars wouldn't be going to fight it.
As for it not being harmful that is false. It makes you dumber, more lazy and causes eating binges to state the least of the problems. If you want to be successful then you'll avoid it like the plague.

i dont think it would be that bad but it probably wouldnt be beneficial. im a smoker and i admit that smoking makes you sleepy and lazy... there are good points to both sides of the argument. if pot were legal then we wouldnt spend money fighting it. we could make money taxing it. crime rings wouldnt get the money for it. less people would drink and do other more dangerous drugs. People who did smoke could get higher quality cheaper pot. and if everyone was smoking kind bud (good pot) then all of our stoners wouldnt be quite as lazy because its not as lazy of a high and they would all be more happy. people would be less motivated though. People probably wouldnt be as violent. You have to smoke for yourself for along time to see how smoking will change your personality, it makes you more calm and makes you not care about what other people think about you.

I think it would do good. Anyone who smokes continues to do so, illegal or not ! We need to use our prisons for criminals, not for people who harm no one but themselves. I think the only reason it's still illegal is because it generates more money for the government that way !

No question but that decriminalizing and legalizing pot would be beneficial for the nation, giving the drug lords a huge hole in their opportunities to make money and commit crime. Plus, it is safer than booze, would create a tax source for the government, and be more easily accessible for those needing it for medical purposes.

There are some serious negative effects from using marijuana, don't kid yourself. And you are absolutely wrong in assuming it would reduce the use of other drugs.. it would almost certainly increase their use.
And legalizing it would cause a massive spike in crime, particularly in theft and robbery.
Almost no benefit to legalizing it.. and massive downside.
